Nats win 8-6 on Ryan Zimmerman's two-run walk-off homer

Yankees starter Nathan Eovaldi didn't receive a warm welcome from the Nationals' red-hot offense in the first inning. Ian Desmond, the Nats' second batter, ripped a 3-1 pitch, a 98 mph heater, over the scoreboard in right-center for a solo homer. It's Desmond's third on the season.

Two batters later, Bryce Harper continued his assault, golfing an Eovaldi slider over the wall in center. The bullet, which just cleared the wall, was reviewed briefly for fan interference before the original call was confirmed. Harper is now tied with Seattle's Nelson Cruz for the major league lead with 15 homers. Nine of Harper's longballs have come at Nats Park.

Left-hander Gio Gonzalez is perfect through three innings.

Update: Gonzalez ran into major difficulties in the fourth. He allowed his first baserunner when he walked Jacoby Ellsbury to start the inning. Ellsbury scored the Yankees' first run shortly after on a single from Chris Young.

Another walk to Mark Teixeira, a double by Chase Headley and consecutive singles from Jose Pirela and Stephen Drew led to three more runs in the inning.

Yunel Escobar singled to leadoff the bottom of the inning and Harper followed with his 37th walk. But Eovaldi worked out of the no out jam by striking out Ryan Zimmerman and getting Wilson Ramos to ground into a double play.

Update II: Teixeira murdered a Gonzalez changeup in the fifth for a two-run homer, his twelth on the season.

Gonzalez finished the frame, but that was it for him on the evening. He gave up six runs on seven hits with two walks and one strikeout.

Danny Espinosa walked to begin the bottom of the inning. Two batters later, Clint Robinson, pinch-hitting for Gonzalez, doubled to the right-center field gap scoring Espinosa all the way from first. Denard Span, Desmond and Escobar followed with three straight singles plating two more Nats runs.

Surprisingly, the Nats rally ended with Harper hitting into an inning-ending double play.

Nationals manager Matt Williams went to right-hander Blake Treinen out of the bullpen. Treinen pitched a scoreless sixth, surrendering one hit.

With one out in the sixth, Ramos was given the green light and he unleashed on a 3-0 fastball from Yankees reliever David Carpenter to tie the game. The solo shot is Ramos' second on the season, and it extends his major league-leading hitting streak to 19 games.

Update III: Rookie Wilmer Difo picked up a pinch-hit single in his first major league at-bat to lead off the seventh. Difo was just recalled from Double-A Harrisburg this afternoon. Escobar later drew a two-out walk, but both runners were stranded when Harper struck out to end the inning.

Pinch-hitting in the bottom of the ninth, Dan Uggla worked a walk. But Span followed by hitting into an inning-ending double play.

The Nats are 2-1 in extra inning games this year.

Update IV: Ryan Zimmerman won it for the Nats in the 10th with a two-out two-run walk-off homer.

It's Zimmerman's 10th walk-off homer of his career.

The Nationals beat the Yankees 8-6.
