VIERA, Fla. - Bill Bray has reported to the Nationals' minor league camp after being reassigned on Sunday, but Will Ohman has not.
Ohman, who also was reassigned to minor league camp, requested and was granted his unconditional release. The 35-year-old, who made just one spring appearance with the Nats, allowing two hits and two walks in an inning of work, is now a free agent.
Bray will continue to work on his mechanics over at minor league camp. The veteran lefty has had trouble finding his arm slot this spring, which he says is the result of bad habits learned while trying to pitch through a groin injury last season.
The Nationals have not ruled out the possibility of Bray helping them at the big league level this season, and manager Davey Johnson even said Bray could be a possibility for the opening day roster, assuming he sorts out his mechanical issues.
Jayson Werth is dealing with a little tightness in his right forearm caused by a sidearm throw during yesterday's game. Johnson originally was going to give Werth the day off today, but the Nationals right fielder said he's feeling OK and asked back into the lineup. Johnson obliged.
"He wants the ABs, so he's going to play," Johnson said.
There's one other factor here - Werth would rather get his at-bats in today than get this afternoon off and have to make the 90-plus minute drive to Lakeland tomorrow to play the Tigers.
"He didn't want to make the trip to Lakeland with me," Johnson said. "I think he wanted to go fishing."
Head trainer Lee Kuntz reported that the Nationals will consult with Dr. Ken Means, a hand specialist in Baltimore, on how to proceed with Christian Garcia.
Garcia has been diagnosed with a torn tendon in his right forearm, an injury that he suffered during a throwing session back on March 17. The right-hander was put on a 4-6 week shutdown, and if Dr. Means and the rest of the medical personnel in on this like the progress that Garcia has made, he could begin throwing again March 17.
