Scherzer named NL Pitcher of the Month

Two days after he was named National League Player of the Week, Max Scherzer was named National League Pitcher of the Month.

Scherzer was honored for his utterly dominant June, during which he went 6-0 with a 1.00 ERA and 68 strikeouts with only five walks. It was a historic performance for a right-hander who has made plenty of history over the years.

Scherzer became the first pitcher in MLB history to strike out at least 68 batters while issuing five or fewer walks in a calendar month. He's one of only four pitchers in the Live Ball Era with a 1.00 ERA and 68 strikeouts in a month, joining Randy Johnson (June 1997), Roger Clemens (August 1998) and Pedro Martínez (September/October 1999).

This is the sixth time Scherzer has earned a Pitcher of the Month Award, his first since back-to-back honors in April and May 2018.
