PHILADELPHIA - Both Denard Span and Adam LaRoche are out of the Nationals lineup for tonight's series opener against the Phillies.
Span fouled yet another ball off his right foot yesterday (something he's done quite a bit over the last couple of months) and will get today off. So will LaRoche, who is mired in an 0-for-15 slump, with six strikeouts in his last four games.
With Phillies left-hander John Lannan getting the ball tonight, Nats manager Davey Johnson is sitting two left-handed hitters in favor of a right-handed-heavy lineup.
Jeff Kobernus gets the start in center and will lead off today, Chris Marrero gets the start at first base and is hitting sixth, and Steve Lombardozzi will play left field.
Lacking many hitters who are getting on base at a consistent clip right now, Johnson will keep Anthony Rendon in the No. 2 spot in the order.
Dan Haren gets the start for the Nats tonight, looking to improve upon his 5.70 ERA this season. Haren has wins against 29 franchises over his career, but he's never beaten the Phillies, going 0-5 with a 5.79 ERA against them in five career starts.
