PHILADELPHIA - The Nationals kick off a brief five-game road trip tonight against the Phillies, who come into this three-game set riding a bit of an emotional high after last night's walk-off win over the Reds.
The Cincinnati loss puts the Nats three games up on the Reds in the loss column for the best record in baseball. The Nats also got some help from the Giants last night, as the Braves dropped a game out west to push them 6 1/2 games back in the National League East.
The Nats will send Edwin Jackson to the mound tonight as he looks to even his record at 8-8. Jackson had one of his best outings this season his last time out, throwing seven innings, allowing just two runs against the Mets. He struck out 11 and walkde just one.
Jackson has won games in 21 ballparks and against 25 major league teams, but he's never picked up a win at Citizens Bank Park or beaten the Phillies.
Kyle Kendrick (6-9, 4.20 ERA) will take the mound for the Phillies. Kendrick has made two starts against the Nats this season, going 0-1 despite allowing just three runs over 12 innings.
Both Kurt Suzuki and Ian Desmond are in the Nats lineup for tonight.
Suzuki took a foul ball off his right hand in Wednesday's loss to the Braves, while Desmond said he thought he hyperextended his knee running down to first.
