A dominant Guthrie pitches O's to win and sweep over LA

In an amazing pitchers duel on Sunday afternoon, Jeremy Guthrie out-dueled Jared Weaver as the Orioles beat the Los Angeles Angels 1-0 to complete a three-game sweep. O's pitching allowed just one run on 16 hits in this series as LA went scoreless over the last 26 innings. Guthrie, who improved to 8-13, 3.94, gave up just four hits over 8 1/3. He walked one, fanned five and threw 107 pitches, 73 for strikes.
Jim Hunter asks Buck Showalter about the O's 1-0 win over the Angels
O's starters gave up just one run over 24 1/3 this weekend for an ERA of 0.37. He gave up a bloop double and infield single with one out in the ninth, putting runners on the corners. Manager Buck Showalter then called for Mike Gonzalez. He struck out Bobby Abreu for out number two. Then, Showalter summoned Koji Uehara. On his first pitch, he got Torii Hunter to pop up to end the game. The O's have posted back-to-back shutouts for the first time since July 22 and 24 of 2007. With the win, the Orioles completed a series sweep, posted their first winning road trip of the season and ended the season series going 6-0 vs. the Angels. The Orioles have never swept a season series from the Angels until now and the clubs have played each other since 1961. The Orioles looked like they would snap a scoreless tie in the top of the sixth. Josh Bell led off and reached on an error. He was on second when Nick Markakis singled with two outs, but Bell was called out at the plate. Replays showed home plate umpire Brian Gorman missed the call and Bell should have been safe. In the seventh, the O's finally did score. Luke Scott led off with a single and went to third on a Ty Wigginton double. With one out, Matt Wieters fly out to left went for a sac fly and Scott scored for a 1-0 lead. This was the O's fifth series sweep of the season and they ended the road trip at 4-2. They improved to 18-17 in games this year vs. AL West teams and have won 13 of their last 17. The Orioles are off Monday and begin a six-game homestand Tuesday night vs. Boston.
