A look at some Orioles' plate discipline stats

The Orioles offense has not gotten up to speed yet, that is pretty clear to see. The Orioles scored just six runs on 24 hits and went 2-for-22 with runners in scoring position at Minnesota. Right now, the Orioles rank third in the American League in team batting average, but 11th in on-base percentage, 12th in runs and last in walks. The O's have drawn 66 walks and the AL average for a team right now is 106. You could have figured the O's would not rate highly in some of these categories even before the season began, but they certainly figure to start scoring more runs and fans are hoping sooner rather than later. Here's a look at some individual plate discipline stats, courtesy of Fangraphs. There are probably no big surprises here either, but it's interesting to check out. We start with a look at the percentage of non-strikes some players swing at. Outside the strike zone swing percentage: 41.5 - Delmon Young 40.5 - Jonathan Schoop 39.7 - Adam Jones 36.9 - Matt Wieters The team leaders in this category - the players that swing at the fewest percentage of pitches outside the zone - are Nick Markakis at 28.8 and Nelson Cruz at 29.9 percent. Jones gets constantly discussed here for his low walk rate and for chasing pitches. But just going by this stat, he is chasing fewer pitches this year at 39.7 percent to 44.9 percent last year and 41.3 percent in 2012. Here is the look at overall swing percentage, the players that swing the most at all pitches: 59.8 - Delmon Young 57.0 - Jonathan Schoop 55.0 - Adam Jones 51.3 - Steve Clevenger The players that swing the least are Hardy at 42.2 and Markakis at 44.6 percent. Jones actually swung at a higher rate of pitches, 59.0 percent in 2013. Here are walk rates, the percentage of total plate appearances where a batter draws a walk: 2.1 - Jonathan Schoop 3.2 - Adam Jones 3.5 - J.J. Hardy 3.8 - Delmon Young The best walk rates on the team belong to Chris Davis at 13.8 and Clevenger at 12.9 percent. Here are line drive percentages: 30.6 - Matt Wieters 28.3 - Chris Davis 27.6 - Steve Lombardozzi 26.3 - Delmon Young The players currently hitting the fewest percentage of line drives are David Lough at 13.3 percent and Schoop at 12.7 percent.
