A look at the longest O's at-bat of the year, plus farm notes

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - On Monday for the Orioles at Tropicana Field, there was a comeback by Baltimore from a 4-0 deficit, there was a starter going seven innings, there was some gas thrown late in the game by bullpen pitchers. But in the end there was an extra-innings loss as the Orioles fell 5-4 in 10 to Tampa Bay.

There was also a clutch 13-pitch at-bat in the top of the sixth that was the longest this year by any Oriole.

Severino-High-Fives-in-Dugout-Gray-Sidebar.jpgIn the sixth, with the O's down a run and Mark Trumbo at second base, catcher Pedro Severino singled to right on the 13th pitch against lefty Ryan Yarbrough for a game-tying base hit. He fouled off nine pitches before he got one he could handle.

According to STATS, it was the longest at-bat by an Oriole this year. Heading into Monday's games there had been just 34 plate appearances of 13 or more pitches this season all over the major leagues. The Orioles had four 12-pitch at-bats this year and actually added a fifth after Severino's clutch hit yesterday.

Here are the 12-pitch ABs by Orioles this year:

* Cedric Mullins on April 1 in the sixth inning.
* Jonathan Villar on June 2 the sixth inning.
* Trey Mancini on July 6 in the fifth inning.
* Villar on Aug. 25 in the sixth inning.
* Hanser Alberto on Sept. 2 in the 10th inning.

The 'pen pitchers: After Asher Wojciechowski threw seven innings yesterday the Orioles bullpen showed some nice velocity while putting up zeroes until Tommy Pham's game-winning single off Dillon Tate in the last of the 10th.

Tanner Scott fanned two lefty batters around a hit-by-pitch in the last of the eighth. He averaged 97.0 mph on his fastball, topping at 98.4 per Statcast. He got swinging strikes on three of his seven sliders and got both strikeouts on that pitch.

Hunter Harvey fanned one batter and won a nine-pitch battle with catcher Travis d'Arnaud and struck him out to end the eighth. He averaged 96.8 mph and topped at 97.5

Mychal Givens had his latest strong outing when he retired the side in order in the ninth, getting two strikeouts. He averaged 95.9 mph and topped out at 96.9. Givens has recorded seven straight scoreless outings, throwing seven innings while allowing just three hits and no walks and recording 10 strikeouts. He has thrown strikes 70 percent of the time in those outings.

The Orioles' comeback from 4-0 down was impressive before it eventually came up short. Their four-run sixth to tie the game included Alberto's solo homer, Trumbo's two-run double in his first big league game since last August and Severino's 13-pitch RBI hit.

But over the final four innings against the Tampa Bay 'pen, O's batters went 1-for-12 with an infield single. They have now lost three in a row by a total of five runs on this road trip.

The three-city trip ends with today's doubleheader at the Trop. The O's went 1-1 at Washington, 1-2 at Kansas City and are 0-1 against Tampa Bay heading into the twinbill.

Wrapping it up in the minor league regular season: Triple-A Norfolk beat Charlotte on the final day 7-6 in 10 innings on a walk-off RBI hit by Jack Reinheimer. Norfolk finished 60-79 and went 26-24 after the All-Star break. The Tides made a record 241 roster moves this year.

Norfolk's Ryan Mountcastle, the International League MVP, had two hits to finish the year first in the league with 162 hits. That is the most by any Tide as an O's affiliate. Mountcastle, who finished with a nine-game hitting streak, hit .312 for the year with 35 doubles, 25 homers and 83 RBIs in 127 games.

Double-A Bowie lost 7-1 at Richmond, but had clinched a playoff berth the previous day. The Baysox (46-26 in the second half) will host Harrisburg on Wednesday night in Game 1 of a best-of-five Eastern League semi-final playoff series. The probable starting pitcher for Game 1 is right-hander Michael Baumann (6-2, 2.31 ERA). He could be followed by Tyler Herb for Game 2 and Zac Lowther for Game 3. If the final two games are necessary, the Baysox may turn to Alex Wells and Cody Sedlock.

Single-A Frederick lost 11-2 to Potomac to finish 53-84, posting its worst record since 2004. The Keys saw 12 players promoted during the year to Bowie. Lefty DL Hall ended the year tops in the Carolina League in strikeouts per nine among pitchers with 80 or more innings at 12.9/9.

Single-A Delmarva beat Kannapolis 9-5 to finish the regular season at 90-48. Delmarva is the first South Atlantic League team since Augusta in 2006 to win 90 or more, and the 14th team since 1980 to do it. The Shorebirds now advance to the playoffs for the first time since 2005. They play at Hickory on Wednesday in Game 1 of a best-of-three league semi-final. Right-hander Grayson Rodriguez (10-4, 2.68 ERA) starts for Delmarva. The Shorebirds will host Game 2 on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. and Game 3 on Saturday if necessary.

Short-season Single-A Aberdeen needed to win Monday and see Brooklyn lose to earn the New York Penn League wild card playoff berth. Aberdeen (42-33) did its part with a 1-0 victory. But when Brooklyn won, the IronBirds were eliminated and their season came to an end.
