A storybook ending for the Yankees: Derek Jeter's walk-off single beats O's

Even two dramatic homers in the ninth inning tonight could not stop a storybook ending for Derek Jeter and the New York Yankees. In his final home game, Jeter's RBI single in the last of the ninth gave the Yankees a 6-5 walk-off win over the Orioles. After it ended, the O's players stayed and watched the Yankees on-field celebration, applauding Jeter in a show of respect for the Yankee captain. Jeter-sidebar.pngDown 5-2 in the top of the ninth, the O's stunned the crowd and tied the game when Adam Jones hit a two-run homer to make it 5-4, and then with two outs, Steve Pearce hit a game-tying shot off David Robertson to make it a 5-5 game. The Orioles hit four homers tonight, and this is the only loss all year when the O's hit three or more homers. They are now 26-1 in such games. The clubs split the four-game series, and the Orioles, now 95-64, head to Toronto for the final series of the regular season. New York took a 5-2 lead during the Orioles' sloppy last of the seventh. The inning began with Stephen Drew striking out against T.J. McFarland but reaching on a passed ball charged to Caleb Joseph. A walk and bunt single loaded the bases. With one out the bases full, Jeter hit a slow roller to J.J. Hardy at short. His errant throw to second went into right field as two runs scored for a 4-2 lead. The play was ruled RBI fielder's choice and error on the shortstop. The lead grew to 5-2 on Brian McCann's sac fly. The game began much better for them as Nick Markakis and Alejandro De Aza hit back-to-back homers to right field. The two homers off Hiroki Kuroda made it 2-0 as the O's went back-to-back for the seventh time. Kuroda was 1-0 with a 2.39 ERA this year in four starts against the Orioles and had not given up a homer in 26 1/3 innings. Then Markakis hit No. 14 and De Aza hit No. 8. Both came on 1-2 pitches. New York quickly tied it 2-2 in the last of the first on a Derek Jeter RBI single and an error on second baseman Kelly Johnson. Kevin Gausman needed 35 pitches to get through the first but then needed 62 for the next four innings. Over five innings, he allowed three hits and two runs with one walk and five strikeouts. His ERA is now at 3.57. In five September starts, Gausman has pitched to an ERA of 2.87. In eight career games against New York, he has an ERA of 2.00. The Orioles end the season 13-6 against the Yankees. A win tonight would have given the O's six series wins in six tries against New York, and they would have match the 1966 and 1982 teams in winning every series on the year against New York. Now it's on to Toronto for the Orioles as Chris Tillman (13-5, 3.26) pitches Friday night against right-hander Drew Hutchison (10-13, 4.51 ERA).
