Adam Jones calls himself out after O's loss to Minnesota (updated)

Adam Jones was involved in some key plays in the Orioles' 4-3 loss to the Twins today and after the game, with a crowd of reporters at his locker, he called himself out for a few things. First was for not running hard on a grounder back toward the mound in the last of the eighth. "You know me, I always give an effort," he said. "I was kind of frustrated that, I guess, the last one, a checked swing I hit it back to the pitcher. I put my head down when I saw it going back to him. I hear that he dropped it and I looked up. It's all my fault on that at-bat, that effort level. "I give max effort and I didn't give it in that instant. Trust me, those are the kind of things that frustrate me. I could strike out four times and not be bothered by it, but the lack of effort of my behalf, that frustrates me." He also took the fall for the fly ball that should have been caught, but fell in for a two-run double in the top of the third. "Went in the sun and missed it," he said. "Should have got around it better. Mistake. Cost us a couple runs. (Jason) Hammel out there, pitching his heart out. Play like that, gotta make it pretty much. "The first two were in the sun, I caught them. The last one I didn't. My fault, I've got to catch the ball. You could see it off the bat and then it gets into the sun. "I have to make the play. You keep asking the same questions and want different answers. I should have caught the ball. Period." A reporter reminded Jones the team was 3-3 at this point last year and asked Jones if he was happy or not happy with that. "We could be 6-0 or 0-6. You know, .500, we've got 156 to go," he said. "This is a long season. Got to get back on the road and play baseball. We can't give these teams extra outs. They make you pay." What about the 0-3 start in one-run games? "We still can be 29-9, I think the numbers could happen like that can't they? We lost our first two one-run games last year and it turned out the way it did," he said. "It's a long season man, this is the first week. Now everybody catch their breath and now the long haul of the season is about to start." Now the club heads to Boston and Jones was asked about the importance of the series and playing in a tough atmosphere at Fenway Park. "It's important. Look on the scoreboard today, 13 runs they put up there quick," he said. "We got (Wei-Yin) Chen throwing tomorrow. Got to try and go spoil their opening day. "The more people the more you want to shut them up. That is how I look at it. I don't care, they can stand the whole game. When you can silence 40,000 people, it's pretty cool."
