NEW YORK - Well, Manny Machado hit two home runs. Other than that, not a lot went right for the Orioles tonight. This was a disastrous start to a big three-game series in the Bronx, as the O's got hammered 14-4 by the Yankees.
The Orioles certainly could not build on their run of three wins in four games against the Nationals. Tonight they trailed 8-1 after the second inning.
Before the second inning was over, both starting pitcher Yovani Gallardo and center fielder Adam Jones were out of the game. Gallardo was out because he allowed a season-high eight runs in just 1 1/3 innings, the shortest start of his career.
Jones because of a left hamstring strain, an injury that began last night in Washington. Both Jones and manager Buck Showalter are hopeful he will not need to go on the disabled list. Jones tried to leg out a slow roller to third base to start tonight's game. He was thrown out and when he was due to bat in the second inning, Nolan Reimold was in the on-deck circle. The final out was made before Reimold hit, but he went into center field replacing Jones to start the last of the second.
"Well, I think you can see it from the replay. Didn't get to first base in as ample time as I wanted. So, came out of the game," Jones said. "Came out of the game, so something must have not felt great. Took me out of my element. I ain't got my legs as a center fielder. What more do you have?"
When Jones tested the hamstring before the game, he felt ready to go.
"I felt fine man," he said. "It's just the first true test comes when you hit an infield ground ball and the first instinct is to try and beat it out. Probably not the smartest thing to do.
"It sucks. I feel like I let my team down. Put Nolan in a peculiar situation. Just put people in situations that they're not familiar with. Let's try and get this correct and make that big push. At this point and time in the season, missing more than a few games would hurt this team."
Will it be only a few games?
"I don't know. You never know. Tomorrow, might feel great. I'm always optimistic," Jones said.
Here is what Showalter said about Jones: "Just about the same as yesterday. Had a real good day today, felt good, was running around good. The first play, the swinging bunt, the field was wet early on. They put the water on it. He said he thought he'd be all right, went out to center field. I just didn't like the way he was moving around, and I decided not to take a chance with it. See where we are tomorrow. It's not a DL thing. I still think we're in pretty good shape with it."
Machado went 2-for-4 with a solo homer in the first and two-run shot in the sixth, his 30th and 31st of the year. It's his third multi-homer game of the year and ninth of his career.
For the first time in Orioles history, they have three 30-homer players in the same season. Mark Trumbo has 38, Machado 31 and Chris Davis 30. The O's have had two 30-homer players eight times before, not including this season.
More clubhouse quotes:
Showalter on Gallardo: "Just up and wild in the strike zone. Never really got any sequences going. He had a chance to make a pitch in some counts and couldn't make it, and he paid the price. He wasn't the only one. We didn't pitch well tonight on a lot of fronts."
Showalter on whether the Orioles could add an outfielder, even if Jones does not go on the disabled list: "We consider everything. We consider everything. You always try to attack the what-ifs and we'll see what our best options are and go forward. I'll continue to look from within. Dan (Duquette's) here. We'll talk some and see what we've got. There are some roster issues here that are complicated."
Catcher Francisco Pena on Gallardo's outing: "I think it's one of those days that everything was going wrong. Think he was leaving some pitches out and over the plate. After that, it was just one of those days that everything goes wrong. It wasn't his day."
Gallardo on his night: "It's frustrating. I just wasn't able to command the ball. I was just missing location, and the ball was up in the zone. It's the total opposite from what it was last start. It's definitely frustrating. I just tried to build off the last start that I had, and then something like that happens."
Gallardo on his strong bullpen session and dissapointing subsequent start: "Yeah, the bullpen went great. I think everything was built off the last start, and I was feeling good. It was just one of those things today, it's just hard to put a finger on it. What's the point? I just wasn't able to command the ball and missed my spot in certain situations, and made some decent pitches for base hits and that sort of thing. Just groundballs getting through, but I think location was the big part of it."
The Orioles fall to 70-58 and have lost seven of 11 and 18 of their last 30 games. They are 19-22 in the second half. The Yankees are 66-61, have won 10 of their last 15 and are 22-17 in the second half.
