The Orioles made a late lineup change, with Adam Jones serving as the designated hitter tonight instead of starting in center field.
Manager Buck Showalter wants to be careful with Jones' right shoulder. Swinging a bat isn't an issue, but Jones must not be quite ready to make throws from the outfield.
Steve Pearce has been inserted into left field and David Lough shifts to center. Jimmy Paredes goes to the bench.
For the Orioles
Manny Machado 3B
Chris Parmelee RF
Adam Jones DH
Chris Davis 1B
Matt Wieters C
J.J. Hardy SS
Ryan Flaherty 2B
Steve Pearce LF
David Lough CF
Mike Wright RHP
Update: Mike Wright lasted only 1 1/3 innings tonight, leaving the game after issuing a bases-loaded walk to Jose Bautista - his fourth free pass of the night.
Wright was charged with four runs, the last scoring after Tyler Wilson walked Edwin Encarnacion to force in another run. Wright figures to be optioned to Triple-A Norfolk on Saturday with Kevin Gausman coming off the disabled list.
Wright wasn't the same after plate umpire CB Bucknor warned both benches in the first inning following a pitch that grazed Bautista's jersey. Wright has to be allowed to pitch inside. Bucknor overreacted.
I wouldn't let Bucknor work the plate at a Golden Corral.
Blue Jays manager John Gibbons was ejected. Meanwhile, Bautista glared at Wright and jawed at the Orioles' bench. The usual stuff.
Update II: Marco Estrada took a no-hitter into the eighth inning before pinch-hitter Jimmy Paredes led off with a bloop single into left field.
Estrada retired 15 in a row since Manny Machado walked in the third inning.
Paredes was removed from the lineup after batting practice. Adam Jones was put into the designated hitter role. So, of course, Paredes gets the first hit.
Update III: The Orioles avoided the no-hitter and the shutout, but they lost to the Blue Jays 5-4 at Rogers Centre.
Chris Parmelee had an RBI single in the eighth, and another run scored on Chris Davis' grounder. The Orioles loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth and Jones delivered a two-run single - breaking three bats in the process - but Davis struck out.
The game included three ejections on the Blue Jays' side. Cecil wasn't tossed despite hitting Parmelee.
Props to Wilson for holding Toronto to one run over 5 2/3 innings.
J.J. Hardy's hitting streak ended at 11 games.
