The Orioles have won two of three series this year against Tampa Bay, the current American League East leader. They won their first series of the year versus Boston. They are 21-21 against the AL East since Buck Showalter took over as manager.
But if they really wanted to get their fans' attention they may need to do something else - beat the Yankees.
The Orioles are 7-6 this season versus Tampa and Boston but are 0-4 against New York and went just 3-15 against the Yanks last year. They have lost 18 of their last 24 home games against the Yankees and are just 17-41 against them since the start of the 2008 season.
They did go 3-3 versus New York after Showalter took over last year. But this season, they are winless in those four games. They have twice lost in extra-innings and on April 14, the Orioles blew a 5-0 lead at Yankee Stadium and lost in 10 innings.
Here is a stat that has been big in the Yankees' wins this year over the Orioles: They have outscored Baltimore 11-0 in the first two innings of the four contests.
A summary of the games between the teams this year:
April 13 - at New York 7 Orioles 4: The Yankees jump out to a 6-0 lead in the first two innings against Chris Tillman.
April 14 - at New York 6 Orioles 5 (10): The Orioles can't hold a lead of 5-0 in the fifth inning. New York ties it 5-5 on Jorge Posada's homer in the ninth off Kevin Gregg and wins it an inning later.
April 23 - New York 15 at Orioles 3: Alex Rodriguez leads the Yankees' romp with a grand slam and six RBIs.
April 24 - New York 6 at Orioles 3 (11): Brian Roberts' double in the last of the ninth off Mariano Rivera ties the game 3-3, but Robert Andino is thrown out at the plate trying to score the winning run. New York goes on to win in 11.
Maybe it was better for the Orioles that the Yankees won at Tampa Tuesday night to end a six-game losing streak. But New York is just 4-10 since May 3.
What is your take?: Do you think the Orioles are ready to hold their own against New York? What will it take to beat the Yankees and how important would that be to the fans? Are the Yankees still as formidable as they were or does this recent tough stretch show that they are now vulnerable?
