Another Yankees comeback: N.Y. scores two in ninth to beat the Birds

The Orioles held a 4-1 lead in the fifth inning last night and a 3-1 lead starting the fifth tonight, but they didn't win either game against the Yankees. Robinson Cano led off the ninth with a solo homer to right-center off of Tommy Hunter as the Yankees rallied for a 5-4 win over the Orioles in front of 20,141 at Camden Yards. Cano hit his 27th homer, the homer was his second RBI of the night and his 100th for the season, as the blast broke a 3-3 tie. The homer followed a bottom of the eighth where the O's had two on and two outs but couldn't break the tie. The Yankees got their fifth run on a Lyle Overbay RBI infield single, scoring Curtis Granderson, who tripled. The O's rallied with two outs in the ninth against Mariano Rivera as Nate McLouth doubled and a Brian Roberts single scored him for a 5-4 game but Rivera fanned Manny Machado to end it. In the O's third, Roberts and Machado singled with two outs and both scored on a Chris Davis double for a 2-1 Orioles lead. It was Davis' 40th double of the year, making him the first Oriole to ever hit 40 or more doubles and homers in the same season. Davis is the 26th player to achieve the 40-40 mark in Major League history. Those 26 players have done that 36 times now. The last player to do it at his age - 27 - season or younger was Mark Teixeira at age 25 in 2005. The O's lead grew to 3-1 an inning later on a J.J. Hardy RBI double but New York got even with solo homers in the fifth by Grandson and the sixth by Alex Rodriguez. It was his sixth of this year and the 653rd of his career. Scott Feldman gave the Orioles another quality start tonight in allowing three runs and three hits over 7 2/3 innings. Over his last six starts he has pitched to an ERA of 1.77 and O's starter have worked to an ERA of 2.87 on the seven games of this homestand. New York starter Andy Pettitte did not get a decision. He allowed three runs in 6 1/3 innings and leaves Camden Yards with the same record he entered with 28-6 in 45 career games vs. the Orioles. The loss, the O's second straight in this series, drops their record to 9-9 this year vs. the Yankees and to 77-68 for the season.
