Bergy: "I'm fighting for my job."

Brad Bergesen did not get a win tonight, but his pitching helped the Orioles to have a chance to get one. Bergy matched John Danks of the first-place White Sox and the Orioles eventually won in ten innings, 2-1 on Adam Jones' RBI single for a second straight, walk-off victory. Bergesen admitted after the game that he wanted to not only show his new manager what he could do, but also to put forth a good effort to keep his spot in the rotation. "For myself, I want to make a good first impression for the guy. For me, I'm fighting for my job. At times, I almost feel like I'm fighting for my next start. So I wanted to come in tonight and really have a strong performance. "I feel like I've been fighting for my next start since April 5th or 6th of this year. Hopefully, I can stay here, that's a goal of mine and just try to build off this last start." Bergesen gave up just one run, on a solo homer, over seven solid innings. He gave up five hits with one walk and five strikeouts. His ERA is 1.93 over his past two starts. "When you get strike one you are able to do so many different things and you get so much more confidence after that. It was a big key for me tonight." He also wanted to continue what the other starters, well, had started. He wanted to pitch a fourth straight O's quality start. "We talked early on in the year, that we wanted to make it that way. One guy goes out and has a great outing, the next guy wants to go out and have an even better outing. When you create that kind of competition between the starters, you can really start rolling with each other." It was the first time since last June first that the O's recorded four consecutive quality starts and the ERA of the starters in the four games is 2.28. The O's good pitching helped carry the game to extra innings, where Jones ended it with his single in the tenth after he had popped out with the bases loaded vs. the same pitcher, Tony Pena, in the eighth. "It was frustrating (in the eighth). A good pitch to hit, in the middle of the zone, but got under it. Fortunately, I was able to get another crack at it. Our pitchers, they shut their offense down. "Luke (Scott) is the reason why I got another shot. You throw him a strike and he'll hit it and hit it hard. Luke kept it alive and gave me another opportunity. "I based that at bat on redemption. He got away with one once, but not twice." And now the Orioles are 4-0 since Buck Showalter took over as skipper. "People are on their P's and Q's and playing the game. We're playing the game smarter, not really giving them too many outs. We're eliminating all the small things and playing the game better," Jones said. Other notes from the game: *Nick Markakis had a season-high four hits, which tied his career high. He went 4 for 5 and is batting .297. It is his 13th career four-hit game. *The O's have the most AL wins and best winning percentage in the league in extra-innings games and are now 9-3. The Sox are 3-5. *The O's are now 19-16 in one-run games and are 14-4 in one-run games at Camden Yards. *This is not yet Showalter's best start as a manger. In his first-ever season as skipper, he went 6-0 to start for the Yankees in 1992. Tonight, he recorded his 836th career win to move into 64th place all-time, ahead of Don Zimmer. *O's pitchers issued just one walk tonight and they have walked just four over the last five games.
