Bergy on his move to the bullpen

O's right-hander Brad Bergesen last pitched in relief during the 2008 season, once for Bowie and once for Frederick. But he will be in the bullpen tonight here at Camden Yards vs. Boston. With Orioles' starters, including Bergesen, having pitched just 9 1/3 innings combined over the last three games, Bergesen is in the pen tonight. As for how long he stays, there, the O's are not saying for certain right now. "I am going to the bullpen for tonight. I'm going to skip at least one start. So they're just going to go on regular rest (the other starters). It's at least for one time through the rotation. After that, they don't know what the outcome will be. Whether I stay in the pen or go back to starting, it's the unknown right now," Bergesen, who is 3-4, 6.75 in ten starts, said. "It's kind of a combination that they need someone in the pen with the load the bullpen guys have been taking on the last three days and then obviously, my last start was a little bit of a struggle. So they see it as an opportunity for me to get a couple of innings at a time right now. "I'm available tonight, so we'll see what happens." Wednesday night at New York, Bergesen allowed six runs in 2 1/3 innings and he's now given up 16 earned runs in 14 1/3 over his past three starts. He has made a total of 11 relief appearances in the minors and has never pitched out of the pen in the Majors. "I'm not too worried about it, not sweating when I get out there. Once I do get the call and I do get out there, it's just the same as when I'm out there starting. It could be a little of an adjustment, but right now I'm not worried about anything. "It's been very frustrating at times. I feel like since I did come up (from Norfolk) after those three starts, I've been pitching somewhat consistent, minus the last start. Right now this is where I'm needed so hopefully I can give some relief to those guys out there." Maybe this can help him get his sinker and arm slot back as well. "Yeah, definitely I'm hoping so and that's what the staff is hoping for. Just get out there and get in a few innings."
