Berry and Ohlman react to making Orioles' 40-man roster

The Orioles added three players from their minor leagues to their 40-man roster tonight, with the additions of pitchers Tim Berry and Eddie Gamboa, and catcher Michael Ohlman. The 22-year-old Berry went 11-7 with an ERA of 3.85 this past season at Single-A Frederick. Over 152 innings and 27 starts, he gave up 40 walks with 119 strikeouts. Berry went 7-3 with an ERA of 3.27 in 14 starts after the All-Star break. Berry pitched well in the Arizona Fall League, going 2-0 with an ERA of 1.84 over seven games and 14 2/3 innings for league champion Surprise. He allowed an average against of just .217 versus left-handed batters and .207 against right-handed hitters. Berry said he got a call this afternoon from Orioles director of player development Brian Graham. "He just said, 'Congrats, you worked hard and earned it and you're on the roster.' That was an exciting call. The season just ended for me this week so, but I'm already itching to get back to it. I want to hopefully go into spring training and keep the pace I've set," Berry said. The 22-year-old Ohlman batted .313 this season with 29 doubles, 13 homers and 53 RBIs in 100 games for Frederick. Ohlman won the Carolina League's batting title by one point and set Frederick's single-season slugging percentage mark at .524. He was third in the league in OBP at .410 and had a .934 OPS. Ohlman also hit well in the AFL. Over 10 games for Surprise, he hit .290 with four homers, nine RBIs and a 1.250 OPS. He went 5-for-11 with two doubles and three homers against left-handed pitchers. "I'm very excited that some of the hard work behind the scenes is paying off," Ohlman said. "Finally started to put something together and become a complete player." The 28-year-old Gamboa was converted into a knuckleballer this season and went a combined 6-11 with a 4.43 ERA and 114 strikeouts for Double-A Bowie and Triple-A Norfolk. In six minor league seasons since being drafted by the Orioles in the 21st round of the 2008 draft, Gamboa has gone 37-34 with a 3.37 ERA. I'll have more quotes with the new members of the Orioles' 40-man roster on Thursday morning.
