Brach on Hundley: "He plays the game the right way"

The Orioles are bringing their 1-6 Sunday record into today's series finale against the Indians at Camden Yards, their last game before hitting the road for an 11-day trip.

No Sunday wins at home, and their lineup will be missing first baseman Chris Davis, who's going on paternity leave. It may also be missing third baseman Manny Machado, who's day-to-day with a strained right groin.

The Orioles will activate reliever Preston Guilmet from the taxi squad and return to a 12-man pitching staff. Catcher Nick Hundley is expected to join the team, which will require a corresponding roster move - most likely Caleb Joseph returning to Triple-A Norfolk.

Manager Buck Showalter could go with the same platoon system behind the plate, but Hundley figures to also get some starts against right-handers due to his seven-plus seasons in the majors.

Hundley is a lifetime .238/.296/.389 hitter, with a career-high 13 homers and 44 RBIs in 114 games last season. He's thrown out 28 percent of runners attempting to steal and is 0-for-9 this year.

Hundley played an inning in left field in 2009, but that's not why the Orioles traded for him.

In an odd split, Hundley is a career .199 hitter versus left-handers and a .253 hitter against right-handers. He's played in one game at Camden Yards, going 0-for-2 on May 14, 2013. He was hit by pitches from Chris Tillman and Jim Johnson, and he committed an error.

Johnson blew the save in the ninth inning in the Orioles' 3-2 loss.

One of Hundley's teammates with the Padres was current Orioles reliever Brad Brach.

"Real nice guy, good teammate," Brach said. "He was the first starting catcher with the Padres that I threw to. He's a real good guy, hard worker and he's intense. He plays the game the right way. That's for sure.

"The fences being a little shorter here, I think he's got a little bit of pop. He'll have to provide some of that. He's solid back there. He's had a lot of years. He's a veteran catcher who's been up there now for five or six years, so he knows what he's doing."

Brach is convinced that Hundley will blend nicely in the clubhouse.

"He can get along with anybody and I think he'll be a quick transition," Brach said. "I think it's a good addition to the team."
