Buck Showalter on pending roster move and more

We're still waiting for the Orioles to announce the corresponding roster move for pitcher Tyler Wilson.

"Dan's still working some things, so give him the opportunity to continue down that path until we need to do something. I know he's been working a lot of things," said manager Buck Showalter.

"We've got a lot of good players and somebody that will end up in the big leagues. So I take some solace, good feel, that someone's going to end up in the big leagues who is in the big leagues with us. That's why the system's there to protect those guys and it should be. To keep certain teams from hording players."

Showalter wouldn't confirm whether the Orioles are sticking with a seven-man bullpen beyond tonight.

"You've got a left-handed pitcher (Wei-Yin Chen) today, so the right-hander would figure in a little bit more in the length, which is Tyler," Showalter said. "And tomorrow, Brian Matusz comes into play a little bit more. We've got some other things kind of wired about the way it goes after tomorrow, so we're going to take it day to day."

We have no idea how long Wilson will stay with the Orioles.

"The plan is for him to be available to us in long relief tonight in case there's a need," Showalter said. "Every day before Wally (Dave Wallace)and I walk out, guy gets hit with a line drive second pitch of the game, what are we doing? And we've been able to answer that question every night and will continue to.

"We're not going to put something that has to be a strength of every club in harm's way. We're right on the cusp now. We've had to have some extended outings from Tommy (Hunter) and Brad (Brach) and we were fortunate last night that Zach (Britton) needed to pitch."

Nolan Reimold will miss three games while on paternity leave, returning to the roster on July 9. Second baseman Jonathan Schoop could be activated from the 60-day disabled list.

"That could be a lot of guys, including Jonathan or an arm," Showalter said. "And then nearing the All-Star break, there's some things you can do there that really doesn't count a starter as missing a start because of all the off-days. It's kind of funny how they do it. It seems like the off-days come in bunches. You've got one before the All-Star break and one right after the All-Star break. Boy, we'd love to spread those out.

"We've got an idea as long as everybody stays healthy about how we're going to go between now and next Thursday. I know Jon's playing in Frederick, and if that goes well, either go to Bowie or join us on Monday."

The starter for Sunday in Chicago hasn't been announced. Kevin Gausman apparently is in play.

"We're going to wait and see how things go with Gaus and some other things that are kind of up in the air," Showalter said. "We'll probably have a better idea about that after tomorrow night."

Chris Davis and Mitch Moreland each hit two home runs last night. According to Elias, it marked the second time this season that opposing players each hit multiple home runs in the same game. The Tigers' J.D. Martinez belted three and the Yankees' Stephen Drew hit two on June 21.
