The Orioles must figure out a way to fix their rotation. There may not be an easy answer beyond activating Yovani Gallardo and crossing fingers and toes, but the deck needs shuffling or they may not even capture a wild card.
(You totally see what I did there)
Tyler Wilson gave up five runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings Thursday night. He's allowed 10 runs and 14 hits over 9 2/3 innings in two starts this month, and his ERA has risen from 2.93 on May 11 to 4.73.
Mike Wright was charged with four runs and six hits yesterday in five-plus innings. He also walked five batters and hit one, and his ERA is back up to 5.31 after he took advantage of his do-over in his previous outing against the Royals.
Manager Buck Showalter was curious whether Wright could follow Monday's start with another gem. It's all about consistency, but the Blue Jays didn't cooperate.
The Orioles are sending Ubaldo Jimenez to the mound today while attempting to salvage a split of their four-game series in Toronto. He's 3-6 with a 6.21 ERA and 1.893 WHIP in his 12 starts.
It's not getting any easier.
Jimenez won his last start, his first victory since the second game of a May 7 doubleheader. He gave up one run against the Royals, but he worked only five innings, gave up nine hits, walked three batters and threw 106 pitches.
His most impressive accomplishment was not accidentally hitting a Kansas City batter after the brawl.
In his last six starts, Jimenez has worked five innings, 4 1/3, 5 2/3, 1 2/3, five and five. Vance Worley is the long man today because he hasn't pitched since Tuesday.
Jimenez faced the Blue Jays on April 20 and didn't get the decision in a 4-3 win at Camden Yards. He allowed two runs and five hits in five innings, with four walks and six pitches. He threw 110 pitches.
Jimenez is 6-4 with a 3.87 ERA in 14 games (13 starts) against Toronto, but he's 1-2 with a 6.30 ERA and 1.750 WHIP in five games (four starts) spanning 20 innings at Rogers Centre, with 14 earned runs (15 total), 20 hits, 15 walks, 21 strikeouts and five home runs.
Michael Saunders is 5-for-13 with a home run against and Devon Travis is 3-for-8 with a home run against Jimenez, but the Blue Jays are batting .206. Jose Bautista is 3-for-33, Justin Smoak is 2-for-20 with a home run and Josh Donaldson is 3-for-20 with a home run.
Aaron Sanchez is 5-1 with a 2.91 ERA in 12 starts this season and 1-2 with a 5.14 ERA and 1.762 WHIP in eight career games (three starts) versus the Orioles covering 21 innings.
In two starts this month, Sanchez has allowed two earned runs and 10 hits over 14 2/3 innings. He's walked only three and struck out 18.
Chris Davis is 5-for-7 with two home runs and three walks against Sanchez, and he continues to make himself right at home at Rogers Centre.
Adam Jones is hitless in nine at-bats versus Sanchez.
