It was one eventful 10-game homestand for the Orioles. They swept a four-game series and got swept four in a row. They won three of the first six games of the homestand on walk-off homers. They then lost leads the last three days against the Twins, dropping three consecutive one-run games.
The Orioles had an 18-2 win against Oakland where they tied a team record with 26 hits and a 15-2 loss to Minnesota. The Orioles got swept four straight by a Minnesota team that came to Camden Yards with a road record of 21-37 and that was 13-22 in its previous 35 games.
The Orioles clubhouse was probably as quiet and down as I've seen it all year on Sunday afternoon. The O's saw Zach Britton yield a game-tying single with two outs in the ninth and then they gave the game away in the 12th on the errors by Manny Machado and Jimmy Paredes.
It was a gut punch loss and series that send the Orioles reeling as they go on the road. They need to turn it around and fast. But at this point, outside of the players in the clubhouse and the staff, there can't be many left that feel the club is capable of doing that.
In the last three games of the Twins series, O's starters pitched to an ERA of 2.75. In the last two games, the O's bullpen gave up just one earned run. But they still lost. The O's went 0-7 against Minnesota this year and didn't score over three runs in any of the seven games.
It seems this year every time it appears the Orioles are about to make a move, something happens to derail the momentum. This was shaping up to possibly be a homestand where they went 7-3, 8-2 or better. It looked that way when the Orioles started the homestand going 4-0 and 5-1. The Twins came to town with a sub .500 record and the O's were set up to do well against them and finish off a big homestand. But it just didn't happen. The Twins made the key plays late in the games and the Orioles did not.
Now the Orioles have to win on the road, where they are 25-36 for the season. They head to Kansas City's Kauffman Stadium tonight, where their season ended last October in the American League Championship Series. The Royals have the best record in the AL at 75-48 and are 12-4 their last 16 games. After that, the Orioles head to Texas. The Rangers are 64-59 and have won nine of 11 and 18 of their last 24 games.
The task looks daunting. The task looks almost impossible.
