Checking in on a busy day of O's minor league transactions

The Triple-A Norfolk Tides put infielder Ryan Adams and pitcher Joel Pineiro on the disabled list today. Adams, who got into 29 games with the Orioles last year, is expected to miss three to five weeks with a fractured right thumb. He was batting .210 this year for the Tides. Pineiro was 1-1 with an ERA of 3.65 over his first two starts for Norfolk and gave up 10 hits and five runs with no walks and nine strikeouts in 12 1/3 innings. He is dealing with shoulder soreness. All the roster moves that the Orioles have needed to make in the last week or so eventually have a trickle-down effect on the O's minor leagues and many players are on the move today within the farm system. Three players are moving from Double-A Bowie to join Norfolk in time for tonight's game. They are pitcher Eddie Gamboa and infielders Buck Britton and Carlos Rojas. Gamboa will get the start on the mound tonight when Norfolk begins a homestand at Harbor Park against Charlotte. The 27-year-old right-hander, who will be making his Triple-A debut, went 2-0 with an ERA of 1.42 in nine games with Bowie. The Orioles' 21st-round draft pick in 2008, Gamboa has put together four consecutive scoreless appearances over 15 2/3 innings with Bowie. His last outing was a start, and he pitched six shutout innings of two-hit ball on just 62 pitches against Richmond last Thursday. Britton got into five games with Norfolk in 2010. With the Baysox, Zach Britton's older brother was batting .302 over 16 games, including a mark of .370 against left-handers. Britton missed three weeks with a strained oblique and returned to the Bowie lineup six days ago. The veteran Rojas has played in 128 games with the Tides over the 2009 and 2011 seasons. Rojas, known as a solid defender, was batting .296 in nine Bowie games. The Tides have been involved in 25 transactions since May 7 and have had a staggering total of 46 players on their roster already this year. Pitcher Oliver Drake was added to the Bowie roster off the disabled list today. This afternoon, the Baysox also put outfielder Ronnie Welty on the disabled list with right elbow soreness, which could keep him out for a few weeks. The move was retroactive to Saturday. Welty is the leading hitter among all Orioles farmhands with a .352 batting average. He hit .415 with Single-A Frederick before moving to the Baysox, where he has batted .291 over 14 games. We'll see if those new to the Norfolk roster remain with the Tides for a while or just a few days. Two players that were recently designated for assignment, pitcher Brad Bergesen and infielder Matt Antonelli, could both return to the Norfolk roster if they clear waivers. Single-A Delmarva has activated right-hander Williams Louico off the DL and put lefty Zach Fowler on the disabled list. Louico has not pitched for the Shorebirds since April 12. In three outings, he is 0-0 with a 3.00 ERA.
