Chen's 12 strikeouts, Wieters' three-run homer help O's top A's

It was not just another Sunday at Camden Yards. Wei-Yin Chen set a major league record for strikeouts by a Taiwenese-born pitcher, Matt Wieters returned to the lineup and hit a key homer, Omar Quintanilla had a big day at the plate and Adam Jones continued his recent run production increase. All that happened as the Orioles beat Oakland 6-1 in front of 19,698 to avoid a three-game sweep and improve to 53-49 on the year. The A's fall to 12-3 since the All-Star break and lose for just the fourth time in the past 22 games. Chen got the win, giving up just three hits and one unearned run over 5 2/3 innings. He walked four and fanned 12 to break the record set by Chien-Ming Wang of 10 on June 17, 2007. Chen today became the first Oriole ever to strikeout at least 10 batters in a game and pitch less than than six innings. Chen fanned the side in the first and fourth frames and had nine strikeouts through four innings. He got at least one strikeout in every inning in setting an O's season high for strikeouts. Chen's 12 strikeouts are the most by an Oriole since Erik Bedard fanned 15 Rangers on July 7, 2007 to tie the club record. The Orioles took a 4-0 lead in the third against Travis Blackley as Jones hit an RBI double and Wieters ended a 1-for-31 slump with a three-run homer, his 13th of the season. Jones now has 12 RBIs over his last 13 games. Quintanilla went 3-for-4 with a single, double and solo homer. He now has 10 hits over his last 20 at-bats and is batting .423 in nine games with the Orioles. The Orioles now hit the road for six games against New York and Tampa Bay. Monday night at Yankee Stadium, Miguel Gonzalez (2-2, 4.28 ERA) pitches against Freddy Garcia (4-4, 5.16 ERA).
