Chris Davis drives in two in the 12th as O's win at Boston again

Chris Davis to the rescue. The struggling Orioles offense needed its top homer and RBI man to come through in the 12th inning tonight and he did. Davis delivered a two-out single to score a pair of runs with the bases loaded as the Orioles beat Boston 5-3 in 12 innings. The Orioles improved to 9-6 against Boston this season and ended the Red Sox's eight-series winning streak. With one out in the 12th, J.J. Hardy and Brian Roberts singled against lefty Franklin Morales. After a wild pitch advanced the runners, pinch hitter Steve Pearce was intentionally walked and Manny Machado fouled out. There were two outs when Davis came up with his clutch hit. He was batting .351 on the year with two outs and runners in scoring position before that huge single. The Orioles had just one hit after the sixth inning before their rally in the 12th won the game. Earlier, Boston got the early lead. David Ortiz turned around a Wei-Yin Chen 92 mph fastball in the last of the first for a two-run homer and 2-0 Boston lead. No-hit by Jake Peavy through four innings, the Orioles scored twice in the fifth to tie it on RBI doubles by Matt Wieters and Roberts. Wieters added another RBI double an inning later for a 3-2 edge. But a solo homer by Mike Napoli in the sixth tied it again. Chen went 5 2/3 innings, allowing a career-high 11 hits along with three runs. He gave up two homers for the fifth time in seven starts after doing that just once in his first 14 starts. Chen has recorded just one win over his last nine starts. The Orioles improved to 81-70 on the season with their fourth win in the last five games. They have won two in a row against a Red Sox team that entered this series with 17 wins in its last 21 games. In the series finale on Thursday night, Chris Tillman (16-6, 3.70 ERA) pitches against John Lackey (9-12, 3.56 ERA). A few more notes: With Tampa Bay beating Texas tonight and Kansas City winning over Cleveland, Tampa now holds the first AL wild card and Texas holds the second wild card. Cleveland is now a 1/2 game back of Texas with the Orioles one game behind the Rangers and the Yankees and Royals 2 1/2 games out. The Orioles set a major league record by playing their 114th errorless game of the year. They were tied at 113 with the 2008 Houston Astros. The Orioles bullpen has pitched 10 1/3 scoreless innings in this series with one walk and 10 strikeouts. The O's bullpen has pitched 18 shutout innings during this 4-1 road trip with just three walks and 20 strikeouts. The Orioles have now won six of their last seven series at Fenway Park going 15-6 in their last 21 games in Boston. The top four batters in the O's order went 1-for-21 tonight but the one hit was the Davis two-run single in the 12th inning.
