Chris Davis on game-winning hit, plus Steve Pearce and Ubaldo Jimenez quotes

The Orioles came up with their ninth walk-off win of the year and fourth against an American League East opponent. Chris Davis' single in the 13th provided the 6-5 win for his third walk-off hit. It ended a four-hour, 20-minute game.

Davis' winning hit followed a leadoff walk to Gerardo Parra and a single by Manny Machado. Parra got a great read on Machado's hit to center to make third base and set the stage for Davis.

"I was just looking for a pitch out over the plate to get through the infield or over the infield," Davis said. "A lot of times in those situations, with the winning run at third, I think you try to do too much. I tried not to do too much although the first swing I took I almost fell down. That kind of actually set me up for that next swing."

The Orioles have now won six of seven to get to 71-73.

"After that long slide that we had, where we couldn't seem to do anything right, couple of these wins lately have kind of rejuvenated the team. Obviously, at this time of the year, you know what is at stake and you have to be almost perfect. But we've been playing well," Davis said.

Chris Davis back white.jpgDavis has hit safely in 12 of his last 13 games, batting .413/.550/.935 at 19-for-46 with 15 RBIs in that stretch. Over his past 76 games since June 20, Davis is batting .300/.394/.643 with 68 RBIs.

Davis had some props for Machado who played another strong game on defense and homered in the fifth, giving the O's a 5-4 lead.

"He's been really good this whole year. He made a couple of plays the other night that I just shook my head at," Davis said. "some of those plays he makes are so effortless to him, but they're such great plays. And he's been swinging the bat really well all year. Heads up to Parra for taking the extra base right there. A lot of times you are not sure that ball will fall, and by the time you see it down, you don't have a chance to go three. That made my job a lot easier.

"Tomorrow is going to be a grinder for both teams. Any game is important with what is on the line, so you want to hang in there and win any game in extra innings."

Steve Pearce hit a two-run homer off Joe Kelly during the Orioles' four-run third inning.

"You know J.J. (Hardy) started it off with a line drive," Pearce said. "I think that is what kind of got the ball rolling. Hitting is contagious, and in that third inning, we definitely capitalized on it.

"Big win. We needed it. Everyone contributed and it was just a great all-around win for the club. Our bullpen stepped it up tonight."

Ubaldo Jimenez was seeking his 100th career win tonight. He didn't get it as he gave up four runs and six hits over five innings.

"It was a little bit disappointing because I only threw five innings. It is never good when you do that," Jimenez said. "But the good thing is we won the game, and it is all about the team. Our bullpen has been pitching well like that the whole year. They take a lot of pride in that, and they've been great."

The Red Sox came into this series winning seven of their last nine, but the Orioles continue to beat Boston. They are 11-4 on the year against the Red Sox, including a home mark of 7-1. The Orioles are 9-1 in the last 10 games this year versus the Red Sox.
