Chris Davis on the search for his first homer and rookie Schoop

Chris Davis was a rookie and top prospect once. So he can relate to Jonathan Schoop as the Orioles' 22-year-old infielder begins to settle in as a big league player. "I think he's starting to find it a little bit," Davis said. "The first few games he was swinging at a lot of pitches. The more he's up here, the more he gets a chance to understand what they are trying to do to him. "From what I've seen so far, his work ethic hasn't changed, which is good. He's kept his approach. I know it's a small sample so far, but I like what I see." Manager Buck Showalter has talked about the support Schoop has gotten from the rest of the Orioles players. After a 2-for-18 start, Schoop is 5-for-12 the last three games with two doubles a homer and four RBIs. "That is one of the beautiful things about this clubhouse," Davis said. "We have so many guys that have struggled and kind of found their own way. So when you see a young guy and can help him, you want to do that. Show him the rights and wrongs. It's not always pretty, but it's done out of love. They receive it well for the most part." Davis is still looking for his first homer after a 53-homer season in 2013. But overall, he's pleased with his swing so far and a .303 average, three doubles and six RBIs to this point. He's batting .370 (10-for-27) during a seven-game batting streak since a hitless first two games. "I feel good. Seeing a little different look this year, which is expected after the year I had," Davis said. "But I feel good, getting on base, hitting the ball hard. I understand that everybody wants me to hit a home run every time I get up to bat. That's just not the case. "I think I've had some really good at-bats here early on. Been on base and driven in some key runs and that's my role. That was my role two years ago and going into last year, to be a run producer and play the best first base I can. Hopefully I don't have to go back to the outfield again." Yes, but what about the mound? "I told Buck (Showalter) I will never go back to the mound. I have the right to decline that option now and I will," he said laughing. "I like what we've got going here. Tough road trip to start and like the way we finished up strong. We have guys who have been through adversity here and we understand what it means to stay true to yourself and the game. That is something Buck preaches to us."
