Chris Tillman gives up historic home run (O's lose 4-3)

NEW YORK - Chris Tillman almost served up Alex Rodriguez's 661st home run tonight in the bottom of the first inning, but Delmon Young made a leaping catch at the right field fence and turned it into a sacrifice fly.

Rodriguez deposited an 83 mph changeup over the center field fence to break a 2-2 tie and move himself past Willie Mays for fourth place on baseball's all-time list.

Barry Bonds, Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth, Alex Rodriguez and Willie Mays. How do you feel about it?

Rodriguez, with seven home runs this season, came out of the dugout for a curtain call as the ovation continued. The Yankees made a brief acknowledgement on the scoreboard.

At least it's awkward.

Rodriguez is 6-for-11 with four home runs and eight RBIs lifetime against Tillman, who got a much-needed 5-6-3 double play off Brett Gardner's bat following Jacoby Ellsbury's leadoff single. Ellsbury's hit concluded a 10-pitch at-bat.

Tillman has allowed three runs and seven hits in four innings, with two walks and two strikeouts. He's thrown 78 pitches, 46 for strikes.

Steve Pearce, back in the lineup at second base, made a diving stop and throw to rob Ellsbury and save a run in the fourth.

Tillman posted a 1.98 ERA in four starts against the Yankees last season and tossed seven scoreless innings in his only game in the Bronx.

Chris Davis has strick out twice, raising his season total to 42 in 25 games.

According to ESPN Stats & Info, Young had robbed only one other player of a home run in 823 career games before tonight - Lance Berkman on June 19, 2009.

Update: Back-to-back doubles by Travis Snider and Caleb Joseph in the fifth inning tied the game 3-3.

Joseph also homered tonight. He was 1-for-13 and 3-for-18.

Update II: The Yankees reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fifth on doubles by Brett Gardner and Mark Teixeira.

Tillman has thrown 91 pitches in five innings. The Orioles will go back-to-back games without a quality start after seven in a row.

Chris Davis has struck out three times, raising his season total to 43 in 25 games.

Update III: Tillman is charged with four runs and 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings, with three walks, three strikeouts and a home run. He threw 110 pitches, 64 strikes.

Tommy Hunter stranded two runners.

Tillman's ERA is 6.25 in 31 2/3 innings.

Update IV: The Orioles have lost three in a row, falling to the Yankees tonight 4-3. They're 3-5 in one-run games and 0-3 on their current trip through New York.

Former Orioles reliever Andrew Miller got the save after a four-pitch leadoff walk to Steve Pearce.
