Darren O'Day on tonight's loss and Zach Britton's injury (plus other clubhouse quotes)

It was the sight the Orioles did not want to see: their All-Star closer walking gingerly off the field tonight in the top of the ninth inning.

Zach Britton suffered a sprained left ankle while trying to field a bunt single by White Sox leadoff hitter Adam Eaton. For now, Britton's status is day-to-day until the Orioles find out more about the injury on Sunday.

Britton was getting treatment after the game and not available for interviews. Right-hander Darren O'Day allowed three runs in the eighth as Chicago rallied for an 8-7 victory. O'Day was asked how the bullpen could hold up if Britton had to miss any games.

"I think Zach is the best in the game, so it would be a tough period without him," O'Day said. "We have guys that have done the job before. It was a bad night, but if you look at the body of work we've put together, we have a lot of confidence. So we'll figure something out.

"Zach, you know, he has to run all over the field. Makes a lot of athletic plays. Just because of the kind of contact his sinker produces. Zach has worked really hard to make himself an above-average fielder. I'm sure he'll be fine. He's a tough guy and we'll find out more about that."

O'Day had pitched 8 2/3 scoreless innings this year with 14 strikeouts and came on to protect a 5-4 O's lead in the eighth. But he allowed an RBI single to Jose Abreu and a two-run homer to Todd Frazier.

"Poor performance by the bullpen. Myself mostly," O'Day said. "A lot of weird things and a lot of good things happened tonight. Good to see Pedro (Alvarez) hit some balls hard and do what he does.

"But yeah, it wasn't good by us. I left a lot of pitches over the middle of the plate and when that happens, you are going to give up hits. A testament to our guys in the bottom of the eighth there to battle back and tie it up. Some tough calls there in the ninth. That's baseball."

The three runs O'Day allowed tonight were his most since giving up three last Aug. 21 to Minnesota.

Kevin Gausman on his outing: "I felt good. Definitely got better as the game went on. Was a little sporadic early on. But overall, I was happy with the results. Never want to start the game with a four-pitch walk, but I tried to minimize the damage.

"It was back and forth really the entire game. That is two really good teams. Us battling to sweep a series and them to get one. Taking the series against these guys right now, they are the hottest team in baseball. Personally, I am happy with our entire staff, especially our starters. We came out this series against a really hot team and gave ourselves a chance to win."

Gausman on errors by Manny Machado and Jonathan Schoop: "I don't know if that has ever happened, Manny and Schoop both have an error in the game. I made a big pitch to (Jose) Abreu and kind of got myself out of it. Manny also made some incredible plays and swung the bat well, too. If he has something like that, he always comes back and makes it up to you. Same with Schoopy."

Pedro Alvarez on having a big night on offense: "I don't pay attention to that stuff. I just try to always have good at-bats and put good contact on the ball. Just trying to put good at-bats together. What I like about it (his first O's homer) is that it helped the team. It got the ball rolling a little bit that inning. A good feeling."

Alvarez on how players like him and Hyun Soo Kim can help the lineup: "Anytime anyone can contribute, it's huge for the team. Everyone has a role and if we can fulfill our role throughout the year, that's huge. This is a game of individual success and when you bring it all together as whole, that is how you win games.

"Tonight was just a tough game. Back and forth and it showed resilience on both ends and that is what is expected from these two teams."

Alvarez's homer in the fourth inning was the 600th hit of his career. Machado recorded his third straight multi-hit game and his 11th of the year. The Orioles had 14 hits, and it's the 10th time they've had 10 or more.

The Orioles have scored 23 runs on 37 hits in the first three games of this series against a Chicago staff that entered the series with a major league-best 2.24 team ERA.
