Davis on his off-day, Hundley on Saturday's play at the plate

Orioles first baseman Chris Davis hit a two-run homer in yesterday's 3-2 win over Toronto, but he's not starting today. It is just a day off and there is no injury or any physical reason he is not starting, Davis said. "With everything that has been going on lately, obviously, been putting in a lot of extra work, swinging a lot," Davis said. "Just kind of get me a mental break from getting prepared. Doesn't mean I won't be used. Hopefully I won't need to be used. Maybe we score 20 runs in the first inning and just sit back and enjoy the game. We'll see what happens." Davis joked with reporters about getting the break. "Well, I've got a boo boo on my left chin that has been bothering me. No, it has nothing to do with health," Davis said. "Just a mental day, a few hours off. It wasn't requested. It was done before I had anything to say about it. Kind of saw it coming." Meanwhile, Nick Hundley gets the start at catcher for the second day in a row. He was on the back end of the relay from Nelson Cruz in left to J.J. Hardy at short to home that nailed Jose Bautista at the plate in the eighth inning Saturday. The play was reviewed for the collision rule to see if Hundley had improperly blocked the plate and not to see if the out call was correct. Eventually the out was confirmed. Hundley had to learn the O's new system for plays at the plate where the catcher stands at the back of the dish to catch the ball and drop a quick tag rather than try to make a swipe tag. "We worked on it when I got over here," Hundley said. "Had to clean up some positioning with me feet to start and treat it more like an infield play. Like a tag at second base on a steal instead of a big swipe. If you are out front of the plate and somebody slides to the back of it, it will be longer and harder of a tag." Hundley said the catchers in San Diego were not handling the rule the way the Orioles do it. Has that been an adjustment for him? "Not too bad. As long as it's interpreted the way it should be, we're fine," he said. "There was confusion about it earlier in spring training, but once everyone is on the same page, it's no big deal. "It's different here (than in San Diego). We talked about doing it in spring training like we're doing here, but didn't implement that. I think this is the way it needs to be done."
