Davis has a case of the Wednesdays

Orioles first baseman Chris Davis has hit 12 home runs on Wednesdays this year. Yes, someone is keeping count. Why do I mention it? Because in American League history, only Tino Martinez has hit more Wednesday homers in a season. He bashed 14 for the Yankees in 1997. Davis' 12 homers are tied with Roger Maris (1961) and Frank Thomas (2000) for second. You want to know the major league record, don't you? It's OK to admit it. The MLB record for Wednesday homers is 19 by Jeff Bagwell in 1999. Who keeps track of these things? The fine folks at STATS, with a hat tip to the Orioles public relations staff for passing it along today. The Orioles need a victory tonight to take the season series over the Indians and improve to 25-52 at Progressive Field. In the finales of three-game sets that have decided the winner of a series this year, the Orioles have gone 13-6 overall and 6-3 on the road. They're 26-18 in series finales - 13-9 at home and on the road. The Orioles have won their last five series finales. Nate McLouth hit his 99th career home run Tuesday night. He's homered in consecutive games for the 11th time in his career and the first since July 5-6, 2009 at Washington and Chicago. McLouth has homered in three consecutive games twice, on Sept. 26-28, 2005 and April 26-29, 2008, when he hit four in a three-game span. The Casey Cares 5K race held Aug. 3 at Camden Yards raised $69,642.65 for the Casey Cares Foundation, more than doubling the amount at any of the three previous races. Nick and Christina Markakis served as race ambassadors for Casey Cares, an organization that provides ongoing, uplifting programs with a special touch to critically ill children and their families. You can get an inside perspective on life in the majors at "Covering the Bases with Brian Roberts" on Friday, Sept. 6 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at Dempsey's Brew Pub and Restaurant in the warehouse at Camden Yards.
