Down 6-0, the Orioles rally to stun the Twins, 9-6, in series opener

Well, to say the least, that was an impressive win. Down 6-0 as they came to bat in the top of the sixth tonight, the Orioles scored six to tie the game over a two-inning span and then scored three in the top of the 10th to stun the Twins, 9-6, tonight. This was the first time the Orioles won when down 6-0 since June 25, 2010 against the Nationals. The Orioles scored the game's last nine runs while their bullpen kept Minnesota off the board after the Twins scored six runs in the first five innings off Jason Hammel. In the top of the 10th, Manny Machado, batting .410 this year with runners in scoring position, singled in the go-ahead run for a 7-6 lead. A Nick Markakis sac fly made it 8-6, and an Adam Jones RBI single capped the scoring. Jim Johnson pitched the last of the 10th to record his 14th save in 14 chances on the year and his 35th straight to break Randy Myers' team record. The Orioles went to the top of the sixth inning trailing Minnesota 6-0, but they then scored three times each over the next two innings to tie the game at 6-6. After going 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position over the first five innings, the Orioles went 3-for-6 in both the sixth and seventh innings as they evened the score. The sixth inning featured four doubles in a span of six batters. The Orioles season high for doubles on the year was four - over an entire game. They had a total of seven tonight. The last time the Orioles had four or more doubles in an inning was August 26, 2011. The first five batters in the order - Nate McLouth, Machado, Markakis, Jones and Chris Davis - went a combined 13-for-28 with seven runs, six RBIs and five doubles. In the first five innings, the Orioles scored no runs on five hits and went 1-for-7 with RISP. In the last five, they scored nine runs on 13 hits, going 9-for-17 with RISP. Davis, who hit his 10th homer, went 3-for-6 with three doubles and two RBIs. His three hits matched his output from his previous seven games when he went 3-for-22. T.J. McFarland was an unsung hero in the win, pitching 2 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of Hammel; Tommy Hunter added another 2 1/3 scoreless before Johnson got the final three outs. Hunter got the win and has now pitched 14 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings. What a win in Minnesota, as the Orioles improved to 22-14 and won for the sixth time in the last eight games and the 15th time in their last 22 contests.
