Early notes on rotation, Machado and more (updated)

Orioles manager Buck Showalter said his rotation is set through July 29, though it's always subject to change if something unexpected arises. He said there have been a few tweaks regarding the order.

Showalter said no other starters will be optioned during the All-Star break.

Kevin Gausman will make two starts with Triple-A Norfolk before returning to the Orioles, staying on a schedule that puts him on the mound every five days. They considered sending him to Double-A Bowie for one start, but he'll remain with the Tides.

As I wrote earlier today, Miguel Gonzalez and Wei-Yin Chen will start this weekend before the break. Showalter said the names weren't revealed earlier because the Nationals hadn't announced their starters.

Left-hander Gio Gonzalez starts tonight and Max Scherzer is expected to start Sunday after throwing a bullpen session this afternoon. Doug Fister could start Saturday.

gausman-pitching-gray-glasses.jpgShowalter said there are no plans to lower Manny Machado in the lineup. Machado has 19 home runs and the Orioles don't want to disrupt him.

If it ain't broke ...

"It does make you attack the eight and nine hitters a little differently," he said.

The Orioles will fly to Detroit on Thursday afternoon and hold a workout before resuming their season the following night against the Tigers. The All-Star participants - Machado, Adam Jones, Zach Britton and Darren O'Day - will return to Baltimore after the game.

Showalter said he's hoping that Jones, replacing the Royals' Alex Gordon in the American League's starting lineup, gets to play center field.

Orioles coach Einar Diaz will throw to Machado in the Home Run Derby that's held Monday night.

Update: The Nationals announced that Jordan Zimmerman, placed on paternity leave today, will start Saturday against the Orioles.
