Frustrating loss: O's one run short at Yankee Stadium as losing streak reaches three

The Orioles switched ballparks but suffered yet another frustrating loss in New York tonight.

Alex Rodriguez hit career homer No. 661 to move to fourth on the all-time list, and Chris Tillman gave up four runs and 10 hits as the Yankees beat the Orioles 4-3 at Yankee Stadium.

The Orioles fell to two games under .500 for the season at 12-14. They are now 6-10 on the road, 2-2 against the Yankees, 3-5 in one-run games and 2-8 in series-opening games.

This back-and-forth game saw the O's lead 1-0 in the first and then trail 2-1 after the bottom of the inning. Jimmy Paredes' solo homer in the first off Nathan Eovaldi made it 1-0, his fourth home run of the season. But a Rodriguez sac fly and Mark Teixeira's RBI single made it 2-1.

Delmon Young rob.pngDelmon Young had a leaping catch over the wall in right field that robbed Rodriguez of a homer in the first, and later in the frame, he threw Teixeira out trying to stretch his single into a double.

Caleb Joseph continued his assault on Yankees pitching this year with a solo homer to left for a 2-2 tie in the third. Joseph later added an RBI double in the fifth.

This year against New York, Joseph is 9-for-14 with a double, a triple, a homer and four RBIs.

But each time the O's tied this game, they fell behind in the bottom of the inning. Joseph's double in the fifth made it 3-3 but the Orioles lost out on a bigger inning when Paredes was picked off first with runners on the corners and Adam Jones grounded out.

New York took a 3-2 lead in the last of the third when Rodriguez hit the milestone homer to pass Willie Mays on the all-time list. He got a brief curtain call, and Rodriguez is now 6-for-12 with four career homers off Tillman.

Tillman went 5 2/3 innings, allowing 10 hits (one off his career high) and four runs, with three walks and three strikeouts. He falls to 2-4 with an ERA of 6.25 for the season and has an ERA of 7.30 in eight career starts at Yankee Stadium.

Dellin Betances pitched a scoreless eighth and former Oriole Andrew Miller a scoreless ninth to close out the win. They have now combined to pitch 31 innings this year without allowing an earned run. Miller is now 12-for-12 in save chances.

In the second game of this series on Friday night, Miguel Gonzalez (3-1, 2.59 ERA) pitches against Adam Warren (2-1, 4.78 ERA).
