Gallardo on next rehab start and pregame notes from Rogers Centre

TORONTO - After two minor league rehab starts - one at Single-A Frederick and one at Triple-A Norfolk - the Orioles decided that right-hander Yovani Gallardo, on the DL with right shoulder tendinitis, would need a third before he is expected to return to their rotation on June 18 when the Orioles host Toronto.

Gallardo will leave here tomorrow and fly to Charlotte. He'll pitch there for the Tides on Monday night.

"You know, I'm OK with it," Gallardo said this morning. "It was a group decision and it doesn't hurt to go out there and repeat the 85-90 pitches. I have never been through rehabbing my shoulder, so I have to listen to the pitching coach and everybody else.

"But you know, I've been feeling good and I'm excited to get in this extra work and prepare for this next start here. Just now, I need to fine-tune everything. My command was better in my second rehab start. Now I want to repeat that and work on all my pitches Monday to get them to where they have to be."

Orioles manager Buck Showalter's son Nathan is an area scout for the team. Nathan was the scout that led the Orioles to draft Texas Tech right-hander Ryan Moseley in the eighth round yesterday.

That had to be a nice moment for Showalter's dad.

"Everybody is learning that you do all this work and it may not fall this way," Showalter said, meaning the scouts put in exhaustive hours and then the players they scouted may not even get drafted by their team. But this time a player did.

Dan Duquette's son, Dana, is also an Orioles area scout and led the team to its 10th-round pick, Keene State College pitcher Cody Dube.

The Orioles also yesterday drafted Rafael Palmeiro's son, Preston, out of N.C. State in round seven.

"I saw Palmeiro's kid when he was this big in the lockerroom. That makes you feel old," Showalter said.

Buck Showalter today talked further about Orioles pitchers making 10 errors this year. That matches their total of all of last year. Tyler Wilson leads the staff with three errors.

Any concern for the skipper? Something the pitchers need to work on more?

"We work all the time, constantly," he said. "It's like I told Tyler yesterday in the outfield. 'You ever have something you are good at and, just in a short stretch, you are bad at it and you wonder if everybody thinks you're that bad?'

"Tyler is a really good fielder. Almost a little anxiety over it. We've seen guys spike balls over to first base. I think four or five of them are throwovers. You know how much we work on that in the spring. I think if you are good at something, sooner or later, it will show up. I don't think they are things the other team is saying we can take advantage of that. But pitchers' defense is very important, should be a strength of ours and I think it will be before it's over," he said.

Showalter said Double-A Bowie pitcher Parker Bridwell will begin throwing on Tuesday. Bridwell went on the minor league disabled list in late May. He is out with a broken rib and was expected to miss about six to eight weeks.
