Galvis to miss one to two months with quad injury

Orioles manager Brandon Hyde anticipates that shortstop Freddy Galvis will miss one to two months of the season with a strained right quadriceps muscle, an injury sustained yesterday in the second inning while running out a bunt single.

Galvis was placed on the injured list within a flurry of roster activity earlier today.

Galvis-Fires-DP-Gray-Sidebar.jpg"It's in between a Grade 1 to a Grade 2, so more like a Grade 1-plus," Hyde said in his Zoom call with the media.

"Hoping for the four to six weeks. Could be a little bit longer, just depending on how the rehab goes, how he's feeling. But significant injury and tough day all around yesterday. Really going to miss Freddy here for a while."

Ramón Urías is starting at shortstop and Domingo Leyba at second base after they were recalled this morning. Leyba is the 44th player to appear in a game this season.

Infielder Stevie Wilkerson and pitcher Konner Wade were optioned to Triple-A Norfolk. The Orioles are going with a four-man bench and 13-man pitching staff, with Urías and Leyba providing more flexibility than Wilkerson.

Ryan McKenna also was recalled for the fifth time.

"We just need to get a little bit healthier and we felt it was important to get some healthy bodies in here," Hyde said. "Freddy gets hurt yesterday, we're pretty banged up around the field. We have two or three outfielders right now that are playing through some things and to add Ryan was important from that standpoint.

"Added two infielders just to get a little bit more flexible in the infield. We have a couple days off. From the pitching standpoint, I think things can change day to day there. Obviously, things have changed a lot. Things happen unexpectedly pitching-wise, so sometimes you've got to scramble to make a move there. But with one game left here, three games in Houston, a day off, we're hoping that we can stay like this from a pitching standpoint at least for a little while. And we can add an extra position player, so go 13 and 13 and get three healthy bodies in here."

Anthony Santander is playing with a sore left ankle that hasn't healed since he sprained it April 20. Austin Hays is playing on a sore hamstring - he's strained both - but also is in today's lineup.

"For me, you want to create the environment where you want guys to try to play through things and guys wants to play," Hyde said. "I don't want anybody to ever play hurt and I'm trying to give guys their best opportunity to have success, and sometimes you've got to play through some bumps and bruises. Winning teams have a roster full of them, that want to be in the lineup and try to push to play. I really appreciate those guys coming into my office almost on a daily basis and say, 'Hey, I want to play today.' That's important.

"So adding McKenna gives us a little bit of flexibility there, too. I'm not forcing somebody out there that we feel like needs a day off."

McKenna is leading off and playing center field, with Cedric Mullins getting a scheduled day off. Trey Mancini is on the bench because he needs "a breather," according to Hyde.

Hyde isn't anointing one player as the everyday shortstop in Galvis' absence.

"I think we're going to play the hot hand, whoever is playing best there at shortstop," he said. "I don't have a clear picture on what that's going to look like. Going to give a few guys an opportunity and hopefully someone grabs it and plays really, really well until Freddy comes back. But I don't know the answer to that."
