Chris Tillman has thrown 47 pitches in two innings today, but the Orioles and Tigers remain scoreless at Comerica Park.
Tillman has allowed four hits and walked a batter. He's been aided by outstanding plays by third baseman Manny Machado and left fielder Nate McLouth.
Tillman has allowed eight runs in the third this season, his highest total in any inning.
McLouth singled in the first inning, giving him hits in six of his last eight games and four in a row. He's 7-for-27 in those eight games. Not on fire, but not cold.
Rick Porcello had posted a 9.26 ERA in the first inning this season, with opponents batting .353 against him. He allowed 12 earned runs and 18 hits in 11 2/3 innings.
Travis Ishikawa collected his first hit as an Oriole with a single in the second inning.
Lots of folks are wondering why Ishikawa is starting at first base. Well, it allows Chris Davis to get a bit of a breather as the designated hitter, and it also allows other teams to take another look at Ishikawa if the Orioles are trying to work out a trade.
Ishikawa is here because Miguel Gonzalez went on paternity leave. Gonzalez will return to the 25-man roster on Friday. Ishikawa can't be sent down to the minors without being outrighted, and he can refuse the assignment and become a free agent.
Taylor Teagarden threw out Austin Jackson trying to steal in the first inning, making him 3-for-8 this season.
Chris Dickerson, on the bench again today, is in a 2-for-20 slump that includes 12 strikeouts.
Reliever Jon Rauch could have opted out of his contract at Triple-A Norfolk yesterday, but I'm told he's staying with the Tides. Rauch has allowed one run and five hits in 5 1/3 innings over six appearances, with three walks and four strikeouts.
Kevin Gausman remains the scheduled starter for Norfolk in Game 1 of today's doubleheader against Indianapolis.
Norfolk is 27-0 this season when leading after the fifth inning.
Correction in today's morning entry: I meant that Wei-Yin Chen will throw a simulated game on Thursday. Today is Wednesday. Got my days mixed up. Chen is getting two days off after Monday's bullpen session.
Update: Chris Davis' major league-leading 25th home run, a two-run shot, gave the Orioles a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning.
Davis, who went to the opposite field, is 4-for-11 with three homers and six RBIs vs. Porcello.
The Orioles weren't done. Taylor Teagarden hit a three-run homer to increase the lead to 5-0. That's one home run and three RBIs for Teagarden this season. He has two hits.
Teagarden hadn't faced Porcello before today.
Machado added an RBI single to complete a six-run inning.
Tillman is now up to 60 pitches in three scoreless innings.
J.J. Hardy stole his first base this season and only the seventh of his major league career. The other six came before he joined the Orioles.
Norfolk has altered its rotation, with Daniel McCutchen now starting Game 2 of today's doubleheader. Josh Stinson has been pushed back to Thursday. Jair Jurrjens will start Friday.
Jake Arrieta will start Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader, and Tsuyoshi Wada will start on Sunday.
