SARASOTA, Fla. - Consecutive singles by Chris Davis, J.J. Hardy and Nolan Reimold with one out in the second inning gave the Orioles a 1-0 lead over the Mets in their final spring training game.
Nate McLouth led off the bottom of the third inning with his third home run, the ball hitting the batter's eye in center field. Manny Machado doubled and later scored on Matt Wieters' single - the catcher's 15th RBI this spring.
Orioles 3, Mets 0.
Miguel Gonzalez is cruising. He retired the first eight batters before Jordany Valdespin reached on Davis' error at first base. Davis tried to backhand the ball and missed it.
Gonzalez struck out Collin Cowgill to end the third. He's thrown 31 pitches, 22 for strikes.
Manager Buck Showalter spoke to Jair Jurrjens today about the right-hander's assignment to Triple-A Norfolk. Jurrjens will join Zach Clark, Zach Britton and Freddy Garcia in the Tides' rotation. Steve Johnson will be the other starter once he comes off the disabled list.
Showalter said Johnson could be out "a little longer than you think," as the club takes a cautious approach with the lat injury.
The Tides could temporarily go with four starters and an extra reliever after the Orioles traded for Scott Proctor.
Right now, it appears that Clark will pitch the opener, though it's not official.
Garcia will pitch at 11 a.m. Sunday at Twin Lakes Park. The Orioles claimed him off waivers yesterday.
"He's inventory and a guy who could help us if we have a need," Showalter said. "He's pitched as a starter and out of the bullpen.
"I like Proctor, too. He had a good year in Korea and he's pitched well this spring. In fact, I was upstairs this morning watching video with Dan (Duquette)."
Update: Gonzalez didn't allow a hit until Marlon Byrd's leadoff single in the fifth. Lucas Duda walked, Byrd took third on John Buck's fly ball to right field, and Ruben Tejada followed with a sacrifice fly.
McLouth led off the bottom of the fifth with his second homer today.
Orioles 4, Mets 1.
Gonzalez has allowed one run and one hit, with one walk and four strikeouts. He's thrown 71 pitches, 47 for strikes.
The Orioles have someone warming in the bullpen, so Gonzalez is probably done.
Adam Jones isn't in today's lineup. Here's why:
"He's had a long spring," Showalter said. "Just a feeling. He's ready to start the season. His clock ... he's ready to go."
Update II: Chris Davis hit a two-run homer in the fifth.
Orioles 6, Mets 1.
Brian Matusz has replaced Gonzalez, so the line I provided in the first update is official.
