PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - The Orioles scored a run off Rays starter Matt Andriese in the top of the first inning today on Nolan Reimold's walk, a Jimmy Paredes single and Delmon Young's infield hit.
Reimold has drawn eight walks this spring. Paredes is 19-for-48 (.396).
Zach Davies walked a batter and struck out two, including Evan Longoria, in the bottom of the first inning.
The Orioles are waiting for the results of J.J. Hardy's MRI arthrogram on his left shoulder. The most optimistic scenario has him playing Thursday or Friday.
The dye injection requires that Hardy be shut down for at least a few days.
Showalter said there's a good chance that catcher J.P. Arencibia can avoid the minor league disabled list. The Orioles reassigned Arencibia today while he's shut down with a strained right flexor mass.
Kevin Gausman is starting Tuesday against the Rays in Sarasota. Chris Tillman is starting Wednesday night against the Pirates in Sarasota. Bud Norris will start in a Triple-A game at 1:05 p.m. at Twin Lakes Park.
Wei-Yin Chen is starting Thursday against the Braves in Disney, Miguel Gonzalez is starting Friday against the Braves in Sarasota and Ubaldo Jimenez is starting Saturday against the Braves in Disney. The Wednesday and Friday games air on MASN.
The Orioles definitely will go with 12 pitchers and 13 position players, but Showalter said Triple-A Norfolk and Double-A Bowie will carry 13 pitchers.
Showalter said the Orioles won't rush pitcher Pat Connaughton to minor league camp now that Notre Dame has been eliminated from the NCAA tournament. They want Connaughton to catch his breath and be mentally prepared to focus on baseball.
The Mets, who have been scouting Orioles reliever Brian Matusz, acquired left-hander Alex Torres from the Padres for pitcher Cory Mazzoni and a PTBNL.
Update: Connaughton reportedly told WEEI in Boston that he's pursuing basketball first and will not report to the Orioles this summer.
"We are going to let him sit on it for a day or so, let him get back to school and what have you and then get an idea (on when he would join Orioles). We'd like to have him," Showalter said. "We're not going to pressure him, push him. We want, though, when he decides that it is done, the NBA ain't there, then his full attention comes to baseball instead of coming right to us and then wondering. And now he goes back, now he comes back. He's got to get this out of his system and we are going to let him do it. Once he gets here, he's got to turn the page."
Young just reached on his second infield hit of the day, and the fourth for the Orioles in three innings.
Davies has tossed two scoreless innings with three strikeouts. He's allowed one hit and walked a batter.
Update II: The Orioles scored four runs in the third inning to take a 5-0 lead.
Young reached on the Orioles' fourth infield hit and scored on Jonathan Schoop's double. Ryan Flaherty had an RBI grounder, another run scored on left fielder John Jaso's error and Alejandro De Aza delivered an RBI triple to right-center field.
Davies has thrown three scoreless innings with four strikeouts. De Aza threw out Curt Casali trying to stretch a single into a double in the bottom of the third.
