Game update and more notes (Tillman goes 4 2/3)

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - The Rays scored a run off Orioles starter Chris Tillman in the bottom of the first inning tonight, but Delmon Young's RBI grounder tied the score in the top of the second. Nelson Cruz led off with a single and Matt Wieters doubled before Young tied the game with one out. Wieters is 10-for-26 this spring. Chris Marrero, batting for the first time this spring after recovering from an oblique injury, bounced out to end the inning. Tillman gave up two hits in the first, including Matt Joyce's bunt single. Joyce scored on Evan Longoria's fly ball to right, though he barely beat the throw from Cruz. I counted 21 pitches from Tillman in the first, but that's unofficial. The Orioles signed right-hander Brady Adamek, 23, released last week by the Cardinals. Adamek pitched at three levels of the Cardinals system last year, none above high Single-A, and posted a 1.70 ERA in 24 games. He struck out 36 batters in 37 innings. Adamek will report to extended spring training, according to executive vice president Dan Duquette. Before tonight's game, the Orioles included outfielder Henry Urrutia among their four cuts. "He's probably as improved... I don't know if improved is the word, but keep in mind that last spring, we didn't know much about this guy," said manager Buck Showalter. "Put yourself in, where he was in his life. Come on. I don't know if he's been this much defensively, but he's a lot better than the first time we saw him. He started playing (better) in the fall league. "You could tell in today's game, he probably knew he was going out. It was the first time he wasn't engaged in the game defensively. You could tell it in his face." His arm seemed fine. Urrutia threw out Grady Sizemore trying to stretch a single into a double today in Fort Myers. Alexi Casilla was reassigned after battling hamstring and knee injuries in camp. "He's a guy, I wish he had been healthy from the first day, but he really caught up in a hurry," Showalter said. "We have a real good idea of what Casi is capable of bringing. I'm sure at some point this year, we're going to have a need for him. There are some things we're able to do contractually that show how much we think of him. "He's going to play shortstop (at Triple-A Norfolk). That's the plan. I'm sure they're going to give some other guys time there, but Casi is going to get some consistent at-bats, something he didn't do last year. I'm hoping that if and when we get him back, take him back, he'll be a little more in season." Showalter wouldn't bite when asked whether Jonathan Schoop needs to play every day in the majors or Triple-A, or if he could work in a utility role with the Orioles. "I think he can do both," Showalter said. "Obviously, he probably starts at one position down at Norfolk, though he's capable of moving around. I feel comfortable with him at third or second, and he's played a lot of short. That's why we try not to have guys in the minor leagues play one position in the infield unless they're first basemen. "I've got a pretty good idea of which way we're going to go. There are a couple of things I've got to hear from Richie (Bancells) or Dan and what's going on in the baseball world." Update: The Orioles took a 3-1 lead in the fourth on back-to-back doubles by Steve Pearce and Young, and Steve Lombardozzi's RBI single. Tillman threw 45 pitches through three innings. Update II: Tillman allowed two runs and nine hits in 4 2/3 innings, with one walk, one strikeout and a wild pitch. He threw 79 pitches, 48 for strikes. Zach Britton struck out David DeJesus to strand two runners. Britton is pitching in back-to-back games for the first time this spring.
