Game update and pregame Showalter (O's lose 13-3)

The Orioles are playing from behind again. Zach Britton gave up a run and two hits, walked a batter and was hurt by an error in the top of the first inning. He threw 24 pitches before making it back into the dugout. Derek Jeter reached on another infield hit and took second on Manny Machado's errant throw. Machado has two errors with the Orioles, one of them legit. Alex Rodriguez bounced into a 6-4-3 double play, but Robinson Cano followed with an RBI single. Shortstop J.J. Hardy backhanded Rodiguez's ball and made an off-balance throw to second to start the double play. Robert Andino made the relay, turned to Hardy and pointed. And kept pointing. It was an outstanding play. Umpire Jerry Meals is behind the plate today after blowing the call at first base to end last night's game. Must make for some interesting chatter, though Mark Teixeira isn't in the lineup after aggravating his calf injury. When Orioles manager Buck Showalter was asked about the controversial play, he said, "Would the game have ended there if he was safe? Tied, right?" Point made. Showalter also was asked earlier today about adding an outfielder to the expanded roster. "Dan (Duquette) and I talked last night and this morning," he said. "We talked initially when we did the call-ups about Endy Chavez. We kept Endy around. He's in New York. He'll probably join us on Tuesday unless something changes. "Dan's always going to explore all things. None of them better than Markakis." As for Nick Markakis' medical schedule, Showalter said, "Nicky went to get a CT scan at Johns Hopkins. I hope I didn't paint too positive a picture last night. It depends what comes out of that CT scan and the MRI they're going to have that's close to my house. He's having one in the morning at 9:30. There's some thought of sending him down to Sarasota to see another hand specialist there. He has a spring training house down there. That would work out good for him, but we're not there not. "We're looking at best-case scenario. Until we go down the CT scan, the MRI, all of those things, I think the big hurdle to be positive is whether or not they feel like they have to go in there and surgically repair it. That's not very positive for this season." Update: The Yankees sent 10 batters to the plate in the fourth inning and scored four times to increase their lead to 5-0 before the Orioles rallied for three runs in the bottom half. Britton walked four batters in the inning, including Steve Pearce and Jeter with the bases loaded. He also threw a wild pitch. One run scored on Ichiro Suzuki's infield hit. Showalter raced out of the dugout to argue, and he had to feel the irony with each step. Britton is charged with five runs and five hits in 3 1/3 innings, with five walks, two strikeouts and a wild pitch. He threw 81 pitches, 40 for strikes. Britton had allowed three runs over his last four starts before today. The third inning concluded with Nick Swisher bouncing a ball up the middle that deflected off Britton's glove and face. He recorded the out and kept shaking his head on his way to the dugout. Not making excuses for him, but he wasn't the same pitcher in the fourth. Coincidence? Jake Arrieta made his 59th major league appearance, his first as a reliever, and he inherited a bases-loaded mess. No problem. Arrieta struck out Swisher and Rodriguez to complete Britton's line. The Orioles chased Freddy Garcia in the bottom of the fourth. Nate McLouth led off with a walk and Garcia hit Hardy behind the left shoulder with an 0-2 splitter. Wilson Betemit followed with a two-run double for his first RBIs since July 31 in New York. Betemit is 4-for-8 with four RBIs lifetime against Garcia. Matt Wieters added an RBI single with one out, and Joba Chamberlain replaced Garcia. Betemit will be getting a lot more at-bats with Markakis injured. He entered the game batting .304 from the left side of the plate. Update II: Pinch-hitter Curtis Granderson homered off Jake Arrieta on the first pitch thrown to him leading off the top of the sixth. Yankees 6, Orioles 3. Showalter mentioned one of his favorite movie scenes again today while discussing Markakis and how the Orioles will get along without him. "It's a tough one, but the season and the competition goes on," he said. "Nick's not going to leave us. His presence and what he's meant to our club off the field and in the clubhouse. It's always that battle that coaches and managers kind of fight, to get people to understand the impact someone has on a club other than statistics. And I understand it works both ways. But I think that's what you'll miss as much as anything. "You've got to look at it like 'Apollo 13,' the great scene where they said, 'This has the chance to be our worst disaster,' and the guy who runs the control room says, 'No, I think it's got the chance to be our finest moment.' And that's the way you have to look at it. You've got the chance for someone else. And that's kind of what this club has been all about this year. "It won't be from lack of effort. And just his presence in the dugout means a lot to the guys." Update III: Who invited Granderson to the party? Granderson looped a two-run single into left field off Zach Phillips to increase New York's lead to 8-3 in the seventh. Phillips also inherited a bases-loaded, one-out jam. Two of the runners scored. Arrieta is charged with three runs and three hits in three innings, with one walk, four strikeouts, one home run, one wild pitch and one hit batter. Update IV: That got ugly in a hurry. The Yankees scored five runs in the eighth inning to lead, 13-3. One run was charged to Phillips, four to Kevin Gregg (three earned). Mark Reynolds committed the Orioles' second error, and Gregg gave up three hits, including Granderson's two-run double, and walked two batters. Granderson is a triple shy of the cycle and has five RBIs, and he didn't start the game.
