The O's have a chance for season series win vs. NY today

The Orioles have a chance today to do a few things they have not done since 1997. For one, a win over the Yankees would give them the season series versus New York, 10 wins to eight. The last time they won a season series against New York was in 1997, when they went 8-4. The Orioles are 3-5 in Baltimore and 6-3 in New York, where they won all three series this year. A win today gives the Orioles sole possession of first place in the American League East. They last did that this late in the year in 1997, when they led the division every day of that wire-to-wire season. Also, a win today would make the Orioles 79-61 and they have not won 79 or more games since they won that many in 1998. Zach Britton entered today with a record of 4-0 and ERA of 0.94 over his last four starts. Freddy Garcia was 0-2 with an ERA of 7.54 over his last three. But in the fourth today, the Yankees had a 1-0 lead after three innings on a Robinson Cano first-inning RBI single. In the first thre games of this series, the Orioles outscored New York 20-18 and had 17 extra-base hits (five doubles and 12 homers) to the Yankees' seven (three doubles and four homers). The last two weekends, the Orioles have 23 extra-base hits against Yankees pitching and 18 of those are homers. The Yankees have just seven homers in the six games.
