SARASOTA, Fla. - We're going to be here a while.
The Orioles sent eight batters to the plate in the bottom of the first inning and took a 3-0 lead over Team Spain, which removed its starter, former Orioles farmhand, Richard Salazar, with one out in the second.
Russ Canzler belted a three-run homer after Yamaico Navarro singled and Steve Pearce walked. Danny Valencia had an infield hit and Trayvon Robinson walked before LJ Hoes ripped a ground ball to the right side that deflected off Robinson for an out. Hoes is credited with a hit.
Nolan Reimold singled in the second inning, and Pearce delivered an RBI single to increase the lead to 4-0. Canzler followed with a sacrifice fly, giving him four RBIs.
None of these statistics are official. They aren't included in the Grapefruit League stats.
Jake Arrieta threw 31 pitches, 19 strikes, over the first two innings. He allowed two hits and walked a batter.
Hoes' three-base error in center field in the third inning led to Spain's only run, reducing the Orioles' lead to 5-1. Arrieta allowed one unearned run and three hits in three innings, with one walk and two strikeouts. He threw 45 pitches, 27 for strikes.
Luis Ayala is warming in the Orioles' bullpen and getting ready to make his first spring appearance.
Update: Ayala allowed two hits in a scoreless inning, and Canzler smacked a two-run homer in the fourth to give him six RBIs on the day and the Orioles a 7-1 lead.
Canzler owns Spain.
Zach Britton has entered the game in the top of the fifth.
Before the game, manager Buck Showalter told reporters that the Orioles have "high hopes" for Cuban outfielder Henry Urrutia, who hasn't played competitively since 2010.
"It's been a while, so we've got to patient with the amount of time he's been away from it and adjustments he's got to make to life here," Showalter said. "So just because it's delayed doesn't mean it's denied. He will reach his level. And we think it's got a chance to be the big leagues.
"He's engaged. You can tell this is a guy that's played a high level of baseball. He's a confident kid. The more you're around, you realize we're not on this planet alone. There are people that can play this game all over the world. And we think he's got a chance to be one of those. This is a pretty polished guy. I can't tell you about baseball for sure, but I can tell you the rest of it is pretty impressive. He understands what he's getting ready to do.
"I'm glad we're going to start him down there. Who knows, maybe before spring is over, we'll get him back (in big league camp) for a game or two. I'll lean on what they tell me. He's in their hands now. Very capable hands."
Urrutia's childhood hero was former Yankees center fielder Bernie Williams.
"That's a good role model," Showalter said. "Bernie was a heck of a player. I had Bernie when he was 17. Urrutia is what, 25, 26? He's got some catching up to do. The challenge is not to move too fast."
Showalter said catcher Taylor Teagarden took 25 swings yesterday to test his lower back and is doing better.
