Game update and Showalter's pregame praise (Hardy homers)

The Rockies lead the field with 112, followed by the Padres and Orioles with 100. The Rays committed their 98th tonight, tying them with the Giants and costing them a run. Right fielder Matt Joyce mishandled Matt Wieters' two-out bloop single down the line in the bottom of the first inning, allowing Adam Jones to score from first base and giving the Orioles a 1-0 lead. Jones, who reached on a walk, held up at third before DeMarlo Hale waved him home. Wieters is 5-for-8 lifetime against Rays left-hander Matt Moore. Jason Hammel retired the first seven batters before Ryan Roberts homered in the third inning to tie the game. Hammel has allowed nine homers in 20 starts, including four in a May 30 start in Toronto." Manager Buck Showalter invited Triple-A Norfolk manager Ron Johnson and pitching coach Mike Griffin to sit with him for his pregame press conference. It was a nice gesture, Showalter's way of showing his gratitude after the Orioles kept raiding the Tides' roster all season. "How did you guys finish over .500?" Showalter asked. "He did it," Johnson said, pointing to Griffin. "I don't really know. It just ended and we were over." Showalter praised Johnson and Griffin for "a great job down there this year." "My gosh," Showalter said. "Never a complaint. It was just, 'What do you need? What's the club need?' I tried to call Ronny for nothing, which wasn't very often. He'd pick up the phone and say, 'Yep, what do you need?' "It was special. It meant a lot to us. I just want to say 'thank you' in front of everybody. I know it wasn't easy all the time." Update: J.J. Hardy's two-run homer in the bottom of the third gave the Orioles a 3-1 lead. Robert Andino led off with a double and Hardy reached the left field seats with one out, making him the fourth Oriole with 20 or more homers this season. Jones has 29, Chris Davis 24 and Mark Reynolds 21. Wieters has 19. This is Hardy's fourth season with 20 or more homers. He hit 30 last year. Nice trade, Andy MacPhail.
