Gausman goes five, Orioles denied run (O's lose 4-1)

CHICAGO - Before today, Orioles right-hander Kevin Gausman had allowed three home runs in 13 starts covering 73 innings. He surrendered only one in his last six outings. The Cubs became the first team with multiple homers off Gausman in a game this season. Luis Valbuena and Javier Baez took him deep in five innings, and the Orioles trail the Cubs 3-0. Gausman was removed for a pinch-hitter, Cord Phelps, leading off the top of the sixth. Brian Matusz replaced him in the bottom half. gausman-pitching-gray-glasses.jpgGausman was charged with three runs and six hits in five innings, with no walks and seven strikeouts. He threw 101 pitches, 62 for strikes. The seven strikeouts match his career-high. Matusz was warming in the top of the fifth after Chris Davis singled with one out and J.J. Hardy walked. Jonathan Schoop popped up and Caleb Joseph singled into right field, but Ryan Sweeney threw out Davis at the plate. Manager Buck Showalter argued that Cubs catcher John Baker was blocking the plate, a violation of Rule 7.13, which led to a crew chief challenge and a 55-second delay. Davis was still ruled out despite having to slide around Baker and reach for the plate. Showalter believed that Davis had no path to it as Baker took the throw. Showalter will be agitated again by the latest challenge that went against the Orioles. Gausman has gone five innings in four of his last 10 starts. He's also worked four and 5 1/3 during that stretch. Jake Arrieta retired the first 13 batters before Davis' single. Down on the farm, infielder Jemile Weeks was activated from Triple-A Norfolk's disabled list. Update: The Orioles broke up Arrieta's shutout bid in the seventh on Nelson Cruz's 34th home run, a career high, but the Cubs scored in the bottom half to lead 4-1. Arismendy Alcantara reached on an infield hit against Brad Brach with two outs to score Logan Watkins, who doubled off T.J. McFarland. Arrieta allowed one run and four hits in seven innings, with one walk and five strikeouts. Update II: The Orioles lose to the Cubs 4-1 at Wrigley Field. Pedro Strop threw a scorless eighth against his former team. He allowed one hit, walked a batter and struck out two. The Orioles are 73-53 overall, 18-23 in day games and 4-3 on the road trip. They had won four in a row. Ubaldo Jimenez warmed in the bullpen in the eighth inning, but he didn't enter the game.
