Gausman starting Saturday in Toronto (and more notes)

PHILADELPHIA - Kevin Gausman will start Saturday against the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre following last night's two-inning stint at Single-A Frederick.

The Orioles will need to activate Gausman from the disabled list and make a corresponding roster move.

Mike Wright will start Friday and Chris Tillman will start Sunday.

Gausman allowed one run in two innings at Frederick in his final tune-up before joining the rotation.

"Good," he said. "Just getting back in a game, just tried to throw all my pitches down there. Tried to throw, a couple times, just start guys off with two changeups in a row, things like that, things that I would work on up here that I wouldn't necessarily do down there. So I kind of had to force myself to do some things. But that was my goal going down there, so I feel good."

Gausman served up a home run on his first pitch.

"There's not much you can do about that," he said. "Fastball. Yeah, I wasn't going to throw anything else first pitch of the game. He was looking for a fastball middle in and he got it."

Gausman, on the disabled list with tendinitis in his right shoulder, has been looking for a chance to start again.

"I feel healthy and ready to go," he said. "I've been in my five-day routine now for a while, so I'm ready to get back out there and help the team win a game.

"I'm definitely ready. Ready to get back in the game, ready to get that adrenaline again. It's been a month and a half, so it's been tough just sitting here watching baseball and not be able to do anything.

"I feel like I kind of figured things out as the year went on last year and I learned a lot from that. I had 20 starts last year and I learned a lot. I went through my ups and downs, but I felt like I had a pretty solid year last year. Nothing is better than just getting your reps and getting your innings at this level and I think the more starts you get at this level, you start to learn things and figure it out."

Miguel Gonzalez said he didn't feel any groin discomfort today while throwing from 120 feet. He's scheduled to throw a bullpen session Thursday and start Saturday at Double-A Bowie.

Rule 5 pick Jason Garcia will throw a bullpen session Thursday in Sarasota.

Triple-A Norfolk's Steve Johnson underwent an MRI on his oblique Monday night after experiencing soreness that's prevented him from pitching for more than a week. Showalter said Johnson has some swelling on his side, but it's nothing serious. The MRI didn't reveal a new injury.

Johnson felt the pain in his side a few weeks ago while pitching.
