Gonzalez happy with his outing against Toronto (O's lose 4-3)

ORIOLES QUICK WRAP Score: Blue Jays 4, Orioles 3 in 10 innings Recap: Making his fourth spring outing, Miguel Gonzalez allowed just five hits and one run over four innings. It was his longest outing this spring. He gave up a run in the fourth but pitched out of a bases-loaded jam. Steve Clevenger had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI. The Orioles had a lead heading to the bottom of the ninth, but Ryan Webb gave up a game-tying single to Munenori Kawasaki. Kelvin De La Cruz gave up the game winning RBI when Josh Thole grounded out to win the game in extra innings. Need to know: Adam Jones returned to the lineup for the first time in a week. He last played last Sunday and then returned to Baltimore for the birth of his first son. Jones went 1-for-2 today with an infield single and a walk. On deck: O's split-squad games on Monday with O's at Philadelphia at 1:05 p.m. and hosting Minnesota at 7:05 p.m. DUNEDIN, Fla. - With his spring innings total on the low side because he left in the first inning with a shin injury March 7, Miguel Gonzalez wanted to build up his innings and pitch count a bit here today and he did. In his longest of four outings this spring, Gonzalez went four innings against Toronto. He gave up five hits, all singles, allowing one run. He walked none and fanned three, throwing 73 pitches, 46 for strikes. Gonzalez pitched just 1/3 of an inning on that March 7 game when he took a ball off his left shin. He went three innings his last time out and bumped that up to four innings today against the Blue Jays. "Pretty happy about this outing," he said. "The last inning was pretty scary, couple balls coming back at me, but it was fun to be out there and (Steve) Clevenger did a good job making those guys struggle with the off-speed and everything else. "I felt good. Gloveside, that was my problem the first couple of games and I worked in the bullpen trying to get better with that and it was coming out good. Inside to lefties, away to righties, it was pretty fun to get better at it." Gonzalez was pleased he pitched out of a bases-loaded, two out jam in the fourth when Toronto got to him for four straight, two-out singles. "Of course. Always a lot better to keep the ball down and get some groundballs," Gonzalez said. They said I'd pitch four. They don't want to push it yet with my shin. We've got two more weeks left, probably two more outings and hope to go five and six." The Orioles continue to lead Toronto 2-1 with the game now in the eighth inning.
