Here's a roundup of the Nationals' minor league playoff summaries from Wednesday:
Triple-A Syracuse Chiefs: Syracuse lost its first game of the International League Governor's Cup semifinals Wednesday, 2-1 in 10 innings to Pawtucket. Syracuse and Pawtucket play the second game of the series tonight in Rhode Island at 7:05 p.m. Chiefs right-hander Scott McGregor will start against Red Sox right-hander Matt Barnes. Syracuse has not won a playoff game since 1994.
High Single-A Potomac Nationals: Left-hander Hector Silvestre went seven innings, allowing five hits and one run while striking out five, to earn a 4-2 win over Lynchburg in game one of the Northern Division championship series in the Carolina League. Game two is Thursday at Pfitzner Stadium at 7:05 p.m.
Low Single-A Hagerstown Suns: The Hagerstown Suns had a thrilling walk-off win in game one of the Northern Division championship series of the South Atlantic League, defeating Greensboro 3-2. Center fielder Rafael Bautista's run-scoring single won the game. The Suns scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the ninth. Game two will be Friday in Greensboro. The Suns will go with right-hander Reynaldo Lopez against left-hander Chris Sadberry.
* The Nationals' 8-5, 14-inning win over the Dodgers Wednesday will go down as one of the more memorable wins in the club's tenure. One of my favorite moments came in the 10th inning, when the Dodgers had the bases loaded and one out with the game tied at 3-3.
Left-hander Xavier Cedeno arrived and struck out Adrian Gonzalez. It was a huge out in the game as it looked like the Dodgers had all the momentum and needed just a fly ball to win the game.
It was also a big moment because manager Matt Williams decided to go with Cedeno over Jerry Blevins. Williams' confidence in Cedeno paid off.
It had to be special for Cedeno, who had bounced up and down between D.C. and Triple-A Syracuse a lot in his young career. To make an impact like that in such a big game was incredibly meaningful for the team and a pitcher fighting to stay in the big leagues. He should get heavy consideration for the a playoff roster spot if the Nationals punch that ticket.
