While the Nationals and Orioles deal with rotation depth going into October, here is how they compare to other teams.
* Angels: The Angels' rotation is Jered Weaver and questions. Garrett Richards and Tyler Skaggs are injured. Weaver is money. C.J. Wilson is inconsistent. Matt Shoemaker, the rookie who saved the rotation when Richards and Skaggs went on the disabled list, is coming back from an oblique injury and hasn't pitched since Sept. 15. His next start will be in the postseason, a huge gamble.
* Athletics: The case can be made that Oakland has the deepest rotation among American League playoff teams. Jon Lester, acquired from Boston at the trade deadline, has been rock solid and is set to pitch the wild card game. Jeff Samardzija, who came from the Cubs in a trade, is an excellent No. 2 while Sonny Gray can pitch with the best. The concern is lefty Scott Kazmir, who has a deadly fastball-slider combo, but hasn't pitched well in September.
* Cardinals: The Cardinals' rotation is having a strong September. Adam Wainwright, a 20-game winner, had fatigue issues in August, but there are no worries now. Lance Lynn is an underrated ace. John Lackey has been consistent and has a strong postseason resume. Shelby Miller is a better pitcher than last season and Michael Wacha, last year's postseason hero, might be healthy enough to pitch in October.
* Dodgers: The question is lefty Hyun-Jin Ryu, who's battling shoulder inflammation. He hasn't pitched since Sept. 12 and his next start might be in the postseason. The Dodgers need him behind the duo of Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke. Former Nats starter Dan Haren is pitching to a 4.00 ERA and has looked good in August and September.
* Giants: The Giants are usually pitching strong going into October, but this time, that's not the case. Lefty Madison Bumgarner and righty Jake Peavy are the two best. Yusmeiro Petit is an unexpected hero. Tim Hudson has a hip injury and is trying to readjust his mechanics to keep his slider from going flat. Does Tim Lincecum pitch in the rotation or bullpen? Ryan Vogelsong has had more bad games than good.
* Pirates: The ace is lefty Francisco Liriano, who has a 0.35 ERA in his first four September starts. Liriano and Gerrit Cole are capable of shutdown games in the postseason and Edinson Volquez has pitched well. The surprise pitcher is Vance Worley. Jeff Locke is depth.
* Royals: James Shields is the Royals' best big-game pitcher and no team wants to face him twice in a postseason series. Jeremy Guthrie has been hot and cold. Jason Vargas is steady, and the kids, Danny Duffy and Yordano Ventura, each have a hasty repertoire.
* Tigers: Of the Big Three, Max Scherzer is pitching the best. David Price has something to prove. Justin Verlander has had a tough year, but is coming around in September. Their best pitcher in the postseason might be Rick Porcello, who has been bumped from the rotation in past postseasons. Starter Anibal Sanchez is back from the disabled list and will pitch out of the bullpen. The Tigers bullpen needs all the help it can get.
