Hyde on Baumann, Wells, injuries and more

Mike Baumann is going to follow his major league debut last night, and his first victory, with another bullpen appearance.

Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said Baumann will be used in similar fashion after working 3 2/3 innings and allowing only an unearned run.

"We're going to do the same thing with Mike, probably in a few days," Hyde said, "where he's going to do an extended bullpen appearance where I probably bring him in in a clean inning and give us some innings out of the 'pen that way."

Baumann replaced rookie Alexander Wells, whose next assignment is undecided. But he appears likely to remain with the club.

"Right now, he's either going to stay in the rotation or go to the bullpen," Hyde said.

The Orioles are playing a doubleheader Saturday against the Blue Jays and must settle on their starters.

"We talked about keeping the guys we have here or bringing up a starter," Hyde said. "I'm not sure yet."

The Orioles transferred reliever Hunter Harvey to the 60-day injured list yesterday in a paper move intended to clear a 40-man roster spot for reliever Manny Barreda. Harvey remains on his rehab assignment with Triple-A Norfolk, though he's now dealing with a right triceps strain rather than a strained lat muscle.

Harvey is eligible to return at any time if healthy.

"I don't know if it's season-ending or not," Hyde said. "I think he's playing catch today, and if that goes well, then maybe a side after that and back in a game. But it's just re-evaluating him after he plays catch."

Trey Mancini and Ramón Urías didn't shed their day-to-day status this afternoon. Mancini is experiencing some soreness on his right side and Urías has a sore right leg, leaving the bench with only two healthy players.

"Both guys are feeling better today," Hyde said. "Trey's is in an oblique area, so you've got to be careful, and Ramón's been kind of dealing with the leg for a couple months now and it grabbed on him in New York and it's still a little bit sore, so we're just going to see how it is tomorrow."

Hyde checks on Mancini daily and won't take any chances with an oblique.

"The right thing to do for him is to let it rest," Hyde said. "I give him a ton of credit. He stayed in the game in New York. He did it on his first swing in the last game in New York, and he knew how short we were on the bench. And we were super close to having (Ryan) McKenna playing second base and (Kelvin) Gutiérrez playing first base with the lead there in New York. So, for him to stay in the ballgame shows what kind of ...

"Fortunately, he walked a couple more times after that to not make it worse. We talk every day, and right now it's just not ready for him to start the game."

Jorge Mateo is starting at shortstop again tonight, but he's also ailing. There seems to be a lot of that going around.

"Mateo's opening eyes, how he's playing. He's playing banged up, too," Hyde said.

"You saw him swing the bat gingerly in New York. He's not running 100 percent. Give him credit for sticking it out and wanting to be in the lineup and trying to play with not feeling great."

McKenna is in center field tonight and looking for his first hit since his latest return to the Orioles. He's 0-for-14 with 10 strikeouts.

McKenna was batting .307/.423/.683 with 11 home runs in 27 games with Norfolk. He hit five home runs within nine games last month.

"It just looks like they're beating him with fastballs right now. He's a little bit late and underneath," Hyde said.

"The big leagues is different than Triple-A. You're going to see some more velocity, you're going to see guys be able to attack you, command the ball better. Mac understands it. He was out here hitting some high-velocity stuff yesterday early, trying to get his timing back a little bit, trying to get a little shorter to the ball."
