Hyde on Bundy, National League play and Jones (O's down 6-3)

PHOENIX - Orioles manager Brandon Hyde can stick with his planned rotation for the next two games with Dylan Bundy's knee no longer causing discomfort.

Bundy remains the scheduled starter for Tuesday night after throwing two bullpen sessions and reporting that his knee is fine.

"Just talked to him," said Hyde. "Feels good and should be good to go."

Hyde is back in the National League for two of the next three opponents, returning to a style of managing that's comfortable to him following his years as a coach with the Marlins and Cubs.

"I love the National League game," he said. "I grew up with the National League game. So you kind of switch gears a little bit. There's a lot more that goes to it, from obviously the pitcher hitting, double switches. That changes a little bit. So looking forward to it."

Having his pitchers bat can bring a little anxiety. There's always a fear of injury, such as Bundy spraining his ankle last summer in Atlanta. Or someone squaring to bunt and taking a fastball off a finger.

"I think always your concern is they don't try to do too much," Hyde said. "They swing too hard or they get on the bases and it's a little bit foreign for them. We try to prepare them as much as we can. We have our guys hit leading up into National League games and get out on the bases a little bit in spring training. That kind of stuff. But yeah, you're never sure.

"In Colorado I thought we did a really good job. We handled the bat well. We got our bunts down and we did a nice job on the bases. So hopefully we can do the same thing in this series."

Hyde never managed Adam Jones, but he understands the significance of the series as he pertains to the five-time All-Star. But he hasn't detected a clubhouse buzz over it.

"I haven't talked to them about it, but I feel like every series we go to there's an ex-Oriole because of the movement, I guess, the last couple of years," Hyde said.

"I know watching MLB Network, where Adam ranks compared to Orioles all-time ... all those great stats, he obviously did so many good things in Baltimore. We have a lot of respect for that. I know he still has relationships with some of our guys here. We have a lot of respect for Adam Jones."

The Orioles let Jones leave as a free agent without attempting to negotiate a new contract and he signed a one-year deal with the Diamondbacks that guaranteed $3 million.

The teardown already started with July trades involving Manny Machado, Zack Britton, Kevin Gausman, Darren O'Day and Jonathan Schoop.

"I think it's part of sports," Hyde said. "There's movement and guys change teams, and with the trade deadline coming up there's going to be more movement around the league and it's part of it.

"I wasn't in the dugout with him so I don't know him. I've never met him, to be honest with you. But I think of someone like Chris Davis, who played with him for a long time, that's a little bit unusual to see somebody in a different uniform that you played with. Both of those guys obviously were part of some great moments in Baltimore history and the postseason runs they had a handful of years ago, they were obviously huge parts of that lineup and big parts of the community.

"I'm sure they have a very close relationship and I'm sure it's going to be a little bit unusual for them."

Update: Aaron Brooks allowed three runs and five hits with a walk in the first inning. Eduardo Escobar had an RBI triple and he scored on Christian Walker's single. Jones singled before Nick Ahmed delivered a run-scoring single.

Update II: The Orioles responded with a run in the second on Richie Martin's bloop single that scored Anthony Santander.

Update III: Jones and Jake Lamb doubled in the third and Carson Kelly had an RBI grounder after Hanser Alberto was charged with an error. The Orioles are down 5-1.

Update IV: Jones had an RBI single off Gabriel Ynoa in the fourth, the run charged to Brooks, but Alberto led off the fifth with a home run and Renato Núñez hit his 23rd to reduce the lead to 6-3.
